Job Description

Harris County Resources for Children and Adults, originally established in 1966 as the Harris County Child Welfare Board, is a dedicated county department committed to supporting vulnerable populations within Harris County, Texas. Over its extensive history spanning more than five decades, this organization has evolved from primarily focusing on child welfare to providing a comprehensive array of services aimed at early prevention, intervention, and support for both children and adults. The department operates with a vision to better the lives of children and adults in Harris County, reflecting a commitment to community welfare and public service that has endured and expanded through generations.

The role of Relief Receptionist at Harris County Resources for Children and Adults is a part-time, as-needed position involving shift work that can occur from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or from 4 p.m. to midnight, including weekends. This position is vital in supporting the front desk operations at the Youth Service Center (YSC), requiring a proactive, professional individual capable of handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Under the supervision of the Administrative Coordinator, the Relief Receptionist serves as the first point of contact for clients, visitors, staff, and other stakeholders arriving at the center. This role includes answering and screening multiple incoming phone lines, welcoming guests, and routing mail and deliveries efficiently and courteously.

The incumbent is expected to maintain a tidy and organized reception area equipped with necessary materials such as forms, pens, and brochures, ensuring a welcoming and professional atmosphere that reflects the mission of Harris County Resources for Children and Adults. Additionally, the role includes responsibilities such as maintaining security protocols by monitoring access through the reception area, logging visitors, issuing badges, and adhering to all safety procedures. The Relief Receptionist must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of working independently with limited supervision while juggling multiple priorities in a dynamic setting.

As a representative of a public service entity, the Relief Receptionist is required to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a diverse population, including individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds. The position also requires maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating a professional demeanor at all times. Annual training of at least 10 hours is mandatory to ensure compliance with departmental standards and continuous professional development.

Harris County Resources for Children and Adults offers a competitive benefits package for full-time employees, which includes comprehensive health and wellness plans, paid time off, and retirement benefits, underscoring the county's commitment to employee well-being and satisfaction. While this Relief Receptionist position is part-time and as needed, it reflects the ongoing dedication Harris County maintains toward its workforce, emphasizing professional growth and work-life balance through flexible scheduling and supportive employment conditions.

This job opportunity is particularly suitable for candidates seeking to contribute meaningfully to community services while working in a supportive, fast-paced environment. Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screening, reflecting the sensitive nature of the department's work. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit detailed applications, as only the information explicitly stated on the application form will be considered for qualification evaluation, not resumes alone. This clear emphasis on documented qualifications ensures a fair and transparent hiring process aligned with Harris County's equal employment opportunity policy.
