Job Description

Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a renowned healthcare institution located in the heart of Silicon Valley, California. Known for its cutting-edge medical services, research, and commitment to healing humanity through science and compassion, SHC serves patients, visitors, and staff across a wide range of health services. As a leading academic medical center, it is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care with innovative treatments and a holistic approach to health and wellness. The Food Services Department at SHC plays a vital role by delivering premium dining experiences that emphasize locally sourced and sustainable food. This supports the institution's Food as Medicine philosophy, which highlights the critical link between nutrition and healing.

The Relief Cook position at Stanford Health Care offers an opportunity to be a crucial part of this dynamic Food Services Department. This part-time role operates on a rotating schedule of eight-hour shifts and includes variable workdays, with a focus on flexibility and availability. Relief Cooks are integral to the preparation of complex hot entrees, side dishes, and baked goods that align with carefully planned menu cycles aimed at promoting patient health and satisfaction.

Starting pay for the Relief Cook position is $35.96 per hour, which reflects the value SHC places on skilled culinary professionals who contribute to the overall health and recovery process through food. Although the relief position does not guarantee a set schedule or regular hours, it offers a unique pathway to permanent part-time or full-time employment, complete with benefits, after passing competency checks. This structure is designed to provide new employees a chance to demonstrate their skills, adaptability, and commitment to excellence in a fast-paced, health-centered kitchen environment.

The Relief Cook is responsible for preparing high-quality meals using standardized recipes and proper cooking techniques. They must manage cooking schedules, food inventory, sanitation, and compliance with safety standards such as HACCP and Joint Commission requirements. The role involves meticulous recordkeeping to track food quantities and temperatures to ensure product consistency and safety. Relief Cooks also support operational efficiency by maintaining clean work areas, properly storing food, and assisting with trayline and catering services.

Beyond technical culinary skills, Stanford Health Care emphasizes cultural competence, teamwork, and patient-centered care. Relief Cooks work closely with patient care providers and other team members to meet the diverse dietary and health needs of individuals in a culturally respectful environment. The institution values diversity and promotes non-discrimination, encouraging applications from all qualified candidates.

The work environment at SHC demands attention to detail, a commitment to quality and safety, and adherence to institutional policies related to dress code, documentation, and patient care philosophies. As part of the SHC team, Relief Cooks are expected to embrace the C-I-CARE standards, which focus on anticipating patient needs, guiding them to better health outcomes, and coordinating complex care to enhance the patient and family experience.

This position not only requires culinary expertise but also the ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and effectively, handle food according to health regulations, and engage positively with both coworkers and patients. With a supportive training regime and opportunities for career advancement within Stanford Health Care, the Relief Cook role offers a meaningful and rewarding pathway for those passionate about the intersection of food, health, and service.
