Job Description

The CDL-A Driver role at Performance Foodservice is a vital position integral to maintaining the company’s high standards in food distribution. This position involves operating tractor trailers or straight trucks to deliver food and food-related products safely and efficiently across regional routes with 1-3 day layovers. Drivers are scheduled to work four to five days per week, typically starting between 11 PM and 3 AM, executing deliveries in compliance with all Department of Transportation regulations. The role is full-time with a competitive pay structure averaging between $90,000 and $100,000 annually, complemented by a $10,000 sign-on bonus subject to eligibility.

In this role, drivers are the face of Performance Foodservice, tasked not only with the safe and timely delivery of products but also with fostering strong customer relationships by communicating professionally and providing excellent service. Drivers perform pre- and post-trip safety inspections in line with DOT regulations, ensuring vehicles meet company and legal safety standards, reporting any necessary repairs, and adhering to all safe driving policies. Responsibilities also include handling customer delivery documentation accurately, managing freight loading and unloading with care and precision, securing cargo properly, and maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of vehicles and loading areas.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of commercial driving experience
  • Must possess a valid CDL-A license
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Meet all applicable state licensing and/or certification requirements
  • Maintain a clean motor vehicle report for the past 3 years
  • Pass a post-offer drug test and criminal background check
  • Successfully pass a road test
  • Obtain or currently hold a valid DOT health card
  • Ability to hand-lift and use equipment such as two-wheelers and lift gates to move product cases/freight of varying weights throughout shifts

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • 1 year commercial driving experience
  • Valid CDL-A license
  • Must be 21+ years of age
  • Meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
  • Clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for past 3 years
  • Pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • Pass road test
  • Attain or have valid current DOT health card or able to secure new DOT health card
  • Able to hand-lift and utilize two-wheeler, lift gate and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout shift

Job Duties

  • Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
  • Functions as a team member within the department and organization as required and perform any duty assigned to best serve the company
  • Performs all required safety checks including inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
  • Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • Immediately reports all safety hazards
  • Inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • Performs count check of items and check customer invoices of products that have been loaded
  • Checks and completes all required paperwork associated with freight accurately
  • Moves tractor to the loading dock and attach preloaded trailer as needed
  • Drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • Unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
  • Performs damage control checks on items, scans and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
  • Verifies delivery of items with customer and obtain proper signatures
  • Collects money where required
  • Loads customer returns onto trailer and secures trailer doors
  • Ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or always secured
  • Unloads damaged goods and customer returns and completes necessary paperwork
  • Completes daily record of hours of service and enters in log in accordance with Federal DOT, state and company requirements
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean as required
  • At the end of the shift secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
