Job Description

The City of East Providence is a vibrant municipal government serving the residents of East Providence, Rhode Island. Known for its commitment to community services and public welfare, the city offers a wide range of programs to support the health, education, and recreational needs of its citizens. As part of its dedication to serving youth and families, the City of East Providence operates a comprehensive Recreation Department that focuses on creating safe, engaging, and inclusive recreational opportunities for people of all ages. The Recreation Department plays a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for residents by coordinating community-based programs, events, and activities geared towards fostering social interaction, physical activity, and personal development.

One significant initiative organized by the Recreation Department is the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is designed to provide free meals to children and teens in the community during the summer months when school meals are unavailable. This program targets youth aged 18 and under, ensuring they have access to nutritious food in a safe and supportive environment. The Summer Food Service Program is an essential component of the city's public health and social services efforts, promoting food security and encouraging healthy eating habits among young residents.

The City of East Providence is currently seeking to hire Recreation Staff for the Summer Food Service Program for a 9-week seasonal role running from June 29, 2026, to August 28, 2026. This position offers up to 15 hours of work per week with a pay rate of $17.00 per hour. While the position does not include additional benefits, it provides a valuable opportunity for individuals interested in community service, youth engagement, and public health to gain hands-on experience in a municipal government setting.

The Recreation Staff members are responsible for assisting with the operation of the Summer Food Service Program at various designated locations throughout East Providence. Under the supervision of Recreation Department leaders, these staff members ensure that the free meals program runs smoothly and complies with all relevant program guidelines, including those established by the Rhode Island Department of Health and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Duties include receiving and inspecting food deliveries, organizing meal service areas, distributing meals accurately using standardized forms, and maintaining cleanliness and order at the meal sites.

This role requires a proactive and detail-oriented approach to ensure each child receives a complete and nutritious meal. Staff members are also tasked with monitoring meal counts for accuracy and reporting daily figures to supervisors. Additionally, recreation staff assist with other youth activities organized by the department when needed, contributing to a positive and enriching environment for children during the summer months. This is an excellent position for individuals who enjoy working as part of a team, have strong communication skills, and are passionate about supporting children in their community. Candidates must be physically capable of working outdoors and ready to actively contribute to the success of the city’s Summer Food Service Program.
