Job Description

The City of Carlsbad, located in north San Diego County, California, offers an exceptional living and working environment characterized by its beautiful beaches, scenic lagoons, and abundant natural open spaces. This vibrant city covers nearly 40 square miles and is home to approximately 115,000 residents. Carlsbad is renowned for its blend of world-class resorts, family-friendly attractions, well-planned neighborhoods, and excellent schools, creating an ideal setting for residents and visitors alike. The city is committed to providing high-quality government services with a focus on preserving nearly 40 percent of its area as open space, ensuring a harmonious balance between development and nature. Carlsbad’s economy is supported by corporate headquarters in technology, life sciences, and action sports industries, as well as a thriving tourism market.

The Parks & Recreation Department plays a crucial role in maintaining this high quality of life by managing approximately 450 acres of parkland, including community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, multigenerational facilities, aquatic centers, tennis courts, and multi-use fields. The department also maintains about 40 miles of recreational trails. This dedicated team ensures that residents can enjoy a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities in well-maintained, accessible facilities.

The Part-Time Senior Recreation Leader position within the Parks & Recreation Department requires a specialist with the ability to independently manage large, high-profile events and programs. This role demands a high level of coordination skills, as incumbents are responsible for overseeing complex event bookings and program management with minimal supervision. This position focuses on the successful coordination of sports field scheduling, park monitoring, and the maintenance of contract agreements related to park use and program operations. Part-time employees in this role must not exceed 980 total hours worked in one fiscal year, and it is important to note that this is a non-benefitted position.

As a Senior Recreation Leader, you will be the key figure in facilitating the smooth operation of sports and recreational activities within the city. Your responsibilities include assisting sports organizations with field allocation and scheduling, managing biannual allocations, and ensuring adherence to guidelines and procedures. The role also involves important customer service functions such as responding to program inquiries, processing registrations, handling refunds, and completing surveys to improve service delivery. Your expertise will help maintain up-to-date records in the City of Carlsbad’s registration system and assist in preparing essential documentation related to field use and lighting schedules. This position combines independent work with collaborative project coordination to meet the goals and objectives of the assigned programs, sometimes supervising other team members to ensure seamless service delivery.

This opportunity is perfect for individuals with a background in recreation management, physical education, or related fields who are passionate about contributing to community well-being through effective program coordination. The City of Carlsbad embraces an inclusive work environment that values diversity, creativity, and the professional growth of its staff. By joining the Parks & Recreation Department as a Senior Recreation Leader, you will become a vital part of a team dedicated to fostering a vibrant, healthy, and engaged community.
