The Town of Surf City’s Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PR&T) Department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors by offering a wide range of recreational programs, wellness initiatives, special events, and community activities. The Recreation Program Coordinator role within the Surf City Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department is a full-time, 40-hour per week, non-exempt position that plays a crucial role in developing, organizing, and managing community recreation and wellness activities. The position’s hiring salary range begins at $45,909 and goes up to $48,204 annually. The coordinator is responsible for planning, promoting, and implementing a variety of recreational programs including youth and adult athletics, wellness initiatives, summer camps, and special community events. This position also involves supervising staff and volunteers, maintaining facility use schedules, and ensuring the overall quality and safety of program environments. The role requires a dynamic individual who can work a non-traditional schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet program demands and support the active community calendar.

Key to the success of this position is the ability to provide outstanding customer service, foster community engagement, and work collaboratively across divisions within the PR&T Department. Responsibilities include administrative duties such as managing communications, preparing reports, and coordinating marketing efforts via website and social media platforms to raise awareness and participation. The coordinator also oversees logistics such as contract management for vendors and instructors, volunteer recruitment and training, and facility regulation enforcement. Safety is a top priority, with duties including first-aid response and accident documentation. This role supports the department’s mission to provide accessible recreation and wellness opportunities that promote healthy and active living for all community members. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Two years of relevant experience
  • Valid NC driver's license
  • Obtain NC CDL with passenger endorsement within six months
  • Obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications within six months
  • Complete Bloodborne Pathogens training within six months
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and non-traditional schedules
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in various environmental conditions
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles including activity buses
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Completed FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 courses
  • Ability to represent the Town professionally and respectfully.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks & Recreation, Early Childhood Education, Physical Education, or a related field
  • Two years of experience working with youth and recreation program planning
  • Valid NC driver's license
  • Valid NC Commercial Driver License (CDL) with passenger endorsement (within 6 months)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid certifications (within 6 months)
  • Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training (within 6 months)
  • Knowledge of standards, principles, and practices of organized youth programs
  • Skills in planning, organizing, promoting, leading, and supervising recreation programs
  • Ability to use standard office machines, computers, and software applications
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to represent the Town professionally and respectfully with diverse individuals
  • ICS/NIMS FEMA courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800
  • Ability to give oral presentations before large groups
  • Skilled in data analysis and report preparation
  • Knowledge of facility maintenance and safety practices.

Job Duties

  • Plans, organizes, and promotes recreation programs including athletics, summer camps, wellness classes, adult and youth programs, and special events
  • Performs administrative tasks such as utilizing a computer to complete projects, typing, copying, and faxing materials as needed, updating files, informing citizens of program status, and responding to inquiries in person, over the phone, or via email
  • Recruits, trains, assigns, and supervises volunteers to assist with program tasks
  • Maintains records of Recreation and Wellness Program volunteers and staff hours and sends reports to the Recreation Program Supervisor
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of camps, wellness, and recreational programs and recruits additional instructors when appropriate
  • Prepares and administers contracts for vendor operations and contracted instructors for all wellness programs, clinics, and classes
  • Works a non-traditional work schedule including nights and weekends according to program needs, with little or no supervision
  • Supervises other Recreation Program staff including training, scheduling, disciplining, and providing input in recruiting, hiring, and promoting
  • Solicits private contributions for the department
  • Coordinates and verifies activity schedules
  • Greets participants and enforces facility regulations and policies
  • Performs and supervises activities for recreation and wellness programs including planning, set-up, directing, teaching, assisting, clean-up, maintenance, and managing volunteers, other recreation personnel, and participants
  • Ensures an environment of safety for all participants, treats minor first-aid incidents, fills out accident reports, and provides copies to the Recreation Program Supervisor
  • May be required to drive the activity bus for camps and programs
  • Maintains a clean work environment at all times
  • Promotes recreation programs on the website and social media accounts
  • Creates flyers and maintains an efficient marketing plan.
