The City of Valdez is a vibrant community located in Alaska, dedicated to providing enriching recreational experiences to its residents. As a local government entity, the City of Valdez prioritizes community wellness and engagement through a broad spectrum of recreational programs and public facilities. The Parks & Recreation Department plays a crucial role in managing these offerings, serving as a hub for athletic activities, aquatics, and special events that encourage active and healthy lifestyles.
The Recreation Coordinator - Athletics & Aquatics position is a key role within the City's Parks & Recreation Division. This permanent, full-time, hourly role offers an annual salary range from $61,912.50 to $84,883.50 and is based at 319 Robe River Drive, AK. The position is essential for overseeing and advancing a comprehensive recreation program that includes indoor pool operations, sports leagues, tournaments, open gym usage, rock wall activities, and community events.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Parks & Recreation Director, the Recreation Coordinator is entrusted with the responsibility of supervising daily pool operations, ensuring facility cleanliness, maintaining water quality, and enforcing safety standards in compliance with regulatory requirements such as ADA, OSHA, and Alaska DEC. A significant aspect of this role involves program development and staff leadership, where the coordinator recruits, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates personnel, including managing lifeguard training and certifications.
Additionally, the Coordinator supports front desk operations and customer service, prepares operational reports, assists with budget monitoring, and handles procurement of supplies and equipment. Marketing and promotion are also vital, requiring creation and distribution of marketing materials and active management of social media platforms to enhance community engagement.
This role demands strong organizational skills, a passion for recreation and aquatics, and the ability to manage multiple programs effectively while delivering a high level of customer service. The position requires a flexible schedule working 37.5 hours per week in various recreation facilities, with the possibility of non-standard hours. The City of Valdez offers a comprehensive benefits package that enhances the overall compensation.
Candidates are expected to have at least two years of relevant experience and must possess or be able to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification. A valid Alaska Driver's License is required or must be obtainable within 30 days of hire, along with the ability to pass a background check. A degree in recreation or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
This opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about fostering community wellness through sports and aquatics, seeking to contribute to the quality of life in the Valdez area.
