Job Description

The City Recreation Department is a dynamic and community-focused establishment dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents through comprehensive recreation programs and special events. The Recreation Coordinator is charged with managing program logistics including scheduling, facility management, instructor coordination, and the use of recreation registration software to maintain accurate records and streamline registrations. Additionally, this role involves budget monitoring, revenue tracking, and seeking alternative funding sources such as grants and sponsorships.

The coordinator also fulfills a leadership function, supervising assigned staff, instructors, and volunteers. They ensure all personnel are properly trained, scheduled, and evaluated through ongoing performance feedback and development opportunities. Handling personnel matters such as coaching and disciplinary actions falls within this scope as well. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • two years recreation program experience
  • ability to work variable shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • physical capability to lift 20 to 40 lbs and perform sustained physical activity
  • knowledge of and ability to use office and recreation registration software
  • ability to supervise staff and volunteers
  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to handle confrontations and work independently
  • valid driver's license may be required for off-site activities

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • degree in Recreation, Education or related field is desired
  • two years' recreation program experience required
  • supervision experience in a recreation setting preferred
  • proficient in office equipment and current computer software programs such as Excel, MS Word, Email, Recreation Registration Software
  • knowledge of recreation trends and program development
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to prepare reports and maintain records
  • ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • physical capability for lifting and working in varied terrains
  • effective supervisory and team leadership skills
  • ability to handle confrontational situations professionally

Job Duties

  • Identify plan, promote and supervise a comprehensive citywide recreation program for preschool, youth, teen, adults, and older adults in a variety of program areas
  • manage the coordination of instruction of recreation programs including recruiting and monitoring contract instructors and negotiating fees
  • evaluate programs and classes through participant evaluations and enrollment statistics
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with Department and City staff, school district administration, County agencies, community organizations, and the general public
  • supervise assigned staff including scheduling, training, evaluating performance, and providing coaching and disciplinary actions
  • recruit, schedule, train, and supervise volunteers for special events and projects
  • seek and secure alternative funding sources such as grants, partnership agreements and sponsorships
  • respond to inquiries and complaints from instructors, participants and the general public
  • promote programs using various media and prepare and distribute promotional materials
  • attend community meetings and events to promote city services
  • serve as liaison to other City departments, agencies, boards, commissions, committees and businesses
  • provide staff support to assigned advisory boards, councils, and commissions
  • assist with office and administrative functions including answering phones, processing registrations and facility bookings
  • ensure policies and procedures are followed consistently
  • perform other duties as assigned
