Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years recreation program experience required
  • Supervision experience preferred
  • Ability to utilize office equipment and current computer software programs such as Excel, MS Word, Email, Recreation Registration Software and the internet
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups and the general public
  • Ability to monitor and administer program/event budgets, costs and schedules
  • Ability to approach problem solving in a logical and objective manner
  • Ability to interact with diverse customers including potential for dissatisfied or abusive behavior
  • Physical capability of sustained lifting, bending, climbing, standing and walking including varied terrain
  • Ability to establish and maintain supervisory relationships in a team environment
  • Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend English and complete reports and maintain records
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions
  • Ability to cooperate, communicate diplomatically and present a positive image
  • Ability to prioritize work, organize documentation and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Degree in Recreation, Education or related field is desired
  • Two years' recreation program experience required
  • Supervision in a recreation setting is preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and ability required to perform the essential duties of the job

Job Duties

  • Identify plan, promote and supervise a comprehensive citywide recreation program for preschool, youth, teen, adults, and older adults in a variety of program areas
  • Responsible for program development and activity write-ups for the Recreation Guide
  • Determine material, equipment, facilities, supervision and instruction needs for each activity or program
  • Maintain and keep inventory of material, equipment, and supplies
  • Provide feedback and make recommendations for future funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Manage the coordination of instruction of recreation programs to include recruiting and monitoring contract instructors, negotiating fees, monitoring class registrations, scheduling facility use, overseeing facility set-up, monitoring registrations and processing instructor payments
  • Evaluate programs and classes through participant evaluations and enrollment statistics
  • Research recreation trends and ideas for new classes/camps/activities/events
  • Input class and event information into recreation registration software
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with Department and City staff, school district administration, County agencies, community organizations, and the general public
  • Coordinate and administer community special events
  • Supervise one (.75 FTE) staff member, identify employee development and training needs and ensure training is obtained in a timely manner
  • Confirm assigned department staff has required certifications an training
  • Schedule work assignments, set priorities and direct work of employee, evaluate and verify performance via weekly check ins and performance evaluations
  • Provide timely coaching and/or disciplinary actions and accommodations when appropriate
  • Recruit, schedule, train, and supervise volunteers for special events, park and beach projects and communicate with participants, volunteers and others to exchange information and coordinate efforts
  • Seek and secure alternative funding sources such as grants, partnership agreements and sponsorships
  • Work cooperatively with other departments and follow established policies, processes and procedures to implement funding sources
  • Respond to inquiries/complaints from contracted instructors, participants and the general public regarding programs, classes, and events
  • Promote programs using a variety of media, prepare and distribute promotional materials, update website, and scheduling software as needed
  • Attend a variety of community meetings and events to promote the city and Department
  • Serve as a liaison to other City departments, agencies, boards, commissions, committees and businesses
  • Provide staff support to assigned advisory boards, councils, and commissions
  • Develops and delivers oral presentations as requested
  • Assist as necessary with normal office and administrative functions including answering phones, processing registrations and facility bookings and general office reception
  • Ensure processes, policies and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively within assigned responsibilities
