Job Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation administration, physical education, leisure services or a related field
  • one year full-time or its equivalent of recreation experience
  • possession of Red Cross Standard Certification in First Aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, and Water Safety Certification as applicable
  • valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
  • ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and background check

Job Duties

  • Plan, coordinate, implement, supervise, and evaluate instructional fee classes, teen activities, special events, rentals, excursions for youth and adults, inclusive programs, community services, and recreational programs for assigned age groups
  • monitor day-to-day operations of programs and events, including making site visits, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a supervisor and ensuring that programs and events have required materials and supplies
  • recruit, train, and supervise temporary and seasonal recreation staff, including instruction in CPR, first aid, and department policies and procedures
  • enforce safety and operating procedures and provide for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes and building codes
  • assist in the development, recommendation and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the assigned area(s)
  • provide support to their supervisor for new programming in the areas of aquatics, recreation, special needs, arts, sports, community services, and expression, special events and respond to new requests and proposals
  • participate in the preparation and administration of assigned program budget
  • educate and enforce the Division’s Code of Conduct, including behavioral management of participants and community members
  • meet with community groups, schools, and organizations to plan, develop and schedule inter-related programs and/or events
  • network with schools, local organizations, and other appropriate groups to develop and provide creative recreation programs for the community
  • maintain records of events and operations
  • prepare activity publicity fliers and advertisements, prepares or assists in the preparation of the tri-annual brochure of recreation classes, services and activities
  • prepare various reports
  • conduct surveys to determine community recreational needs
  • possess adequate written communication skills to perform job related tasks
  • may be required to present staff reports to the Park & Recreation Commission
  • perform other duties as assigned
