Job Description
Eaton County Parks and Recreation Department is a vital public sector agency committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors through diverse recreational opportunities and community engagement initiatives. Located at 133 Fitzgerald Park Dr., Grand Ledge, MI, this department plays a pivotal role in creating vibrant community spaces and offering innovative programming that fosters health, wellness, and social connection. The department maintains extensive parklands and supports a wide range of recreational activities from youth camps to community-wide special events, contributing significantly to the cultural and recreational wellbeing of Eaton County.
The role under consideration is a full-time Parks and Recreation Programmer position intended to develop, coordinate, and oversee revenue-producing recreation programs, activities, and special events. Reporting directly to the Parks and Recreation Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for devising engaging and diverse recreational programming for children, adults, and families across multiple sites within the county. This includes youth programs, introductory sports camps, summer camps, camping programs, special interest classes, and community events.
Salary for this position ranges between $40,851 and $53,102 annually, reflecting the specialization and responsibility involved. The work schedule typically encompasses a 40-hour week, although days and hours may vary according to programming demands, and occasional on-call weekend duties are required.
The programmer will be deeply involved in budget management, including preparing, monitoring, and implementing budgets for various events and programs while maintaining detailed financial records of revenues and expenditures. An essential part of this role entails grant writing and sponsorship solicitation to fundraise and sustain program initiatives. The position also requires strong marketing skills to create brochures, flyers, newsletters, and online content, maintaining public information kiosks and social media platforms to promote activities and maximize community engagement.
Leadership and community collaboration are core to this job. The candidate will train and supervise volunteers, establish cooperative relationships with public and private organizations, and act as a representative to address community questions and concerns related to recreational programming. The role demands a high level of independent motivation, planning, decision-making, and judgment skills to ensure the successful delivery of quality programs aligned with departmental goals.
Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Programming or a related academic field and bring at least two years of relevant experience at either an intern or professional level. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Publisher is necessary. Desired certifications include Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, American Canoe Association Certification, and Certified Park and Recreation Professional designation. A valid Michigan driver’s license with a clean driving record is also required.
Physical requirements include the ability to travel regularly to various park locations and the willingness to work in a range of weather conditions. The role offers the rewarding opportunity to positively impact community health and engagement through well-crafted recreational programming and event management. Eaton County provides a comprehensive benefits package supporting employees both professionally and personally, reflecting the department's commitment to its workforce. This position is subject to background screening and personnel policies that ensure a safe and professional workplace.
