This role is ideal for individuals passionate about the thoroughbred racing industry and looking to gain valuable experience in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The position available is seasonal, specifically designed for the summer race meet at Colonial Downs Racetrack. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting racing operations by assisting jockeys, trainers, and officials in the paddock and on race days. Their contributions ensure that the races are conducted efficiently, safely, and in strict compliance with racing regulations. This hands-on role provides an exciting opportunity to be part of the live racing experience, requiring attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

The individual in this position will be responsible for various operational functions such as escorting jockeys, managing equipment and safety gear, coordinating with key racing personnel, maintaining order in the paddock, and reporting any safety concerns. They must be adaptable to a sometimes hectic race day environment, demonstrate professionalism, and maintain a courteous demeanor toward colleagues and guests. The job also demands a thorough understanding of Thoroughbred racing terminology and procedures, as well as compliance with all Virginia Racing Commission regulations. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • prior experience in horse racing operations, paddock duties, or stable work preferred
  • must obtain and maintain a valid Virginia Racing Commission racing license
  • ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • willingness to work long hours including early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and live race days
  • ability to work in outdoor conditions with varying weather, crowds, animals, and noise
  • strong communication skills
  • ability to follow detailed instructions and comply with regulations

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • prior experience in horse racing operations or paddock duties preferred
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to work calmly and effectively around horses in a high-pressure environment
  • demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail
  • ability to multitask and maintain organization during live racing events

Job Duties

  • Assist jockeys in the paddock prior to and following races, escort jockeys to and from paddock and starting gate areas, ensure jockeys are properly equipped with safety gear, silks, saddle cloths, and identification, assist with weighing jockeys in and out according to regulations, coordinate with trainers, outriders, starters, and racing officials to ensure smooth race flow and timely post parades, maintain order and organization within the paddock area to promote safety for horses, jockeys, and staff, monitor paddock conditions and report safety concerns, provide professional and courteous assistance to guests, adhere to all Virginia Racing Commission regulations and company policies, resolve issues within scope and escalate as necessary, perform other related duties as assigned
