The Full-Time Security Officer role within the BayCare Leased Employees - Public Safety department at Advocate Health offers a critical position focused on ensuring safety and security with a customer-care approach emphasizing professionalism, fairness, and compassion. This role is scheduled for 40 hours per week, with a night shift from 11 pm to 7 am every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with Thursdays off, working Fridays and alternating weekends. The hourly pay ranges from $21.85 to $32.80, depending on experience and qualifications, and the position includes eligibility for comprehensive benefits. As a security officer, you will be entrusted with maintaining a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff while adhering to department policies, procedures, and safety regulations.

Responsibilities include conducting thorough interior and exterior patrols, performing inspections to identify hazards and vulnerabilities, managing patient valuables, and ensuring compliance with security rules. The officer must act decisively in emergency scenarios, such as active threats, fires, or incidents involving aggressive individuals, including responding to service calls and utilizing de-escalation techniques and use of force tools when necessary, such as conducted electrical weapons (CEW) and handcuffing. The role demands strong observational skills, ethical behavior, and robust communication capabilities, including liaison duties with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, to align security practices with statutory and institutional regulations. Regular training and certification maintenance, such as Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO), Stop the Bleed, CPR, and use of CEW, are essential to keep skills current.

The Security Officer is expected to embody Advocate Health’s commitment to patient-centered safety through empathetic and professional interaction with individuals in diverse and sometimes challenging circumstances. The position requires physical fitness to handle tasks such as walking extensive facility areas, physical interventions, and occasional lifting up to 35 lbs. Candidates must have relevant experience in security or public safety roles involving emergency response and risk assessment, as well as sound judgment, maturity, and the ability to maintain calm under pressure. Assistive duties include traffic and crowd control and facilitating collaboration with various departments to promote security awareness and a culture of safety throughout the healthcare environment.

Job Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Minimum 1 year experience in security related public safety or customer service
  • Obtain Security Officer Healthcare Certification within two years of appointment
  • For North Carolina team members obtain Unarmed Guard License within 1 year
  • Obtain Stop the Bleed Certification within 1 year of hire
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Firearm Owners Identification Card or Concealed Carry Weapon license as applicable
  • Certified in conducted energy weapon use within 90 days
  • Pass background investigation drug screen pre-placement physical and periodic assessments
  • Illinois team members must complete State of Illinois 20-hour Basic Security Officer course
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to sit stand walk and drive during workday
  • Must have 20/20 vision or correctable vision
  • Physical ability to restrain individuals and assist clinical staff
  • Ability to handle personal stress and possible violence
  • Comply with safety and security rules
  • Maintain Department uniform and equipment

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in security related public safety or customer service including emergent situation response
  • Certified in conducted energy weapon use within 90 days of hire and periodically thereafter
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise mature judgment and maintain courteous demeanors under stress
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word Excel and database entry
  • Ability to physically intervene safely in high risk situations
  • Emotional intelligence including empathetic compassionate responses
  • Collaborative work with medical staff and law enforcement
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and promote a welcoming therapeutic environment

Job Duties

  • Provides security services with a customer-service approach focusing on professionalism fairness and compassion
  • Inspires confidence in patients visitors and team members by maintaining a professional service-oriented appearance and demeanor
  • Performs routine interior and exterior patrols to ensure safety and security identifying vulnerabilities hazards and fire conditions
  • Responds to workplace violence and service calls including combative or threatening individuals and patient incidents
  • Serves as a primary resource for de-escalation and use of force techniques including conducted electrical weapons and handcuffing
  • Plans and responds to emergencies such as lost or abducted infants fire and active threats
  • Investigates incidents on premises completes reports and escalates complaints
  • Liaises with law enforcement agencies coordinating prisoner patient guards ensuring policy compliance
  • Maintains training standards in communication de-escalation hemorrhage control CPR and use of equipment
  • Assists with exterior traffic crowd control parking enforcement and vehicular assistance
  • Conducts security awareness education to team members and fosters partnerships with departments
