Job Description
The Honest Weight Coop, located within the vibrant Empire State Plaza, is a beloved community-driven food cooperative known for offering high-quality natural and organic products. As a cooperative, it operates with a strong emphasis on health, sustainability, and ethical food sourcing, serving a diverse clientele who value fresh, wholesome foods and friendly, personalized service. This establishment is committed to maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for all patrons and ensuring that their food offerings meet stringent health and quality standards. Their presence at the Empire State Plaza allows them to serve both the local workforce and visitors in an iconic New York State landmark that attracts a steady flow of guests daily.
This particular job opportunity is for the position of Food Service Associate at the Empire State Plaza location. The position is part-time, offering 25 hours per week on weekdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, with the possibility of occasionally working weekends during special events or assisting at their main Food Service department in the store. The pay rate is competitive at $18.00 per hour, and the role reports directly to the Food Service Manager.
The Food Service Associate plays a critical role in delivering excellent and friendly customer service while preparing and serving a broad selection of food products. This role is integral in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the Honest Weight Coop area within the Plaza and ensuring all shift duties are completed diligently. Responsibilities range from food preparation adhering strictly to recipes and portion guidelines to maintaining product quality by inspecting sellable items and properly disposing of those that do not meet standards. The associate is also responsible for stocking and merchandising products in alignment with department standards, contributing to a pleasant shopping environment and efficient operations.
In addition, the Food Service Associate must maintain sanitation and orderliness in food storage and designated work areas, meeting the Health Department’s rigorous sanitary standards. Participation in quarterly inventory checks is expected to keep track of stock levels and product availability. This role requires the associate to stay updated with in-depth knowledge of products and ingredients to effectively assist customers and answer inquiries, fostering a knowledgeable and helpful food service environment.
Being physically active while on the job is essential, as the associate will frequently be standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching throughout their shifts. Lifting up to 50 pounds safely and consistently is also a key requirement. Effective communication skills, the ability to multitask efficiently, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain a balance between friendliness and speed of service are vital for success in this position.
Food Safety Certification and a driver’s license are considered advantages but not mandatory, offering an opportunity for candidates with these credentials to potentially enhance their role within the cooperative. Overall, this position is well-suited for individuals enthusiastic about healthy food service, who excel in a team-oriented environment, and who seek a flexible part-time schedule in a reputable cooperative located in a prestigious and busy urban setting.
