Job Description

Alameda County Behavioral Health, based in Dublin, California, is a dedicated public entity committed to fostering a community where all individuals and their families can successfully realize their potential and pursue their dreams, free from the stigma and discrimination often associated with mental health and substance use issues. The organization supports and empowers individuals experiencing mental health and alcohol or drug conditions on their path toward wellness, recovery, and resiliency. As part of Alameda County's comprehensive behavioral health services, the agency provides a range of supportive services, including outpatient care, crisis intervention, medication monitoring, and coordinated multidisciplinary treatment plans, ensuring holistic care that addresses both psychiatric and general medical needs. Alameda County Behavioral Health is deeply invested in high-quality, patient-centered psychiatric services particularly designed to meet the diverse needs of the community, including specialized populations such as the incarcerated individuals in Santa Rita Jail. The organization is renowned for its commitment to excellence, collaboration, and its innovative approach to integrated behavioral health care within the public health system.

The role of Staff Psychiatrist in Adult Outpatient Care at Santa Rita Jail is a critical position within Alameda County Behavioral Health. This full-time role offers a competitive salary of $400,000 annually for 40 hours per week as a W-2 employee. The Staff Psychiatrist will primarily serve the adult incarcerated population, delivering essential psychiatric evaluations, crisis interventions, and ongoing treatment management within the correctional facility setting. This position requires a highly skilled psychiatric physician who is board certified or board eligible, preferably with experience in correctional or county jail work. The psychiatrist will conduct comprehensive psychiatric and general medical assessments, develop and implement individualized treatment plans, and prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications. They will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated and effective care, including coordinating with other healthcare providers and participating in quality assurance and medication monitoring programs. Work shifts can be 8 or 10 hours with no on-call duties, and the typical caseload ranges from 12 to 15 patients per day. Initial patient visits are scheduled for 60 minutes, with follow-up appointments lasting 30 minutes. Documentation is maintained using CorEMR, a specialized electronic medical record system.

Working in the Santa Rita Jail environment offers a unique opportunity to contribute to public health within the correctional system, addressing complex mental health and substance use challenges in an underserved population. Staff psychiatrists play a pivotal role in reducing recidivism by supporting inmates' behavioral health needs and facilitating their recovery and resiliency. This role demands strong clinical capability, excellent documentation, and communication skills, alongside a commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care. Additional benefits provided to this position include an attractive 401K plan with company match, generous annual bonuses, paid time off (PTO), and continuing medical education (CME) accrual. The location in Dublin also offers proximity to vibrant community amenities, excellent transit options including BART, and opportunities to live in a thriving suburban area undergoing dynamic growth and development.
