Job Requirements

  • Two years of leadership experience in recreational, educational, youth development, child care, special events, or community service settings
  • Successful completion of college-level courses in recreation, education, child development, or related fields may substitute on a year-for-year basis
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License
  • Ability to pass physical, criminal background check, drug test, and tuberculosis screening
  • Completion of mandatory reporter training within two weeks of employment
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and be on-call
  • Ability to perform physical duties such as walking, standing, and lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Submission of proof of education if education is used to qualify
  • Compliance with child-care or elder-care state laws if applicable

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development or employment, or community service activities
  • Principles of supervision and training
  • First aid and safety practices
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Familiarity with common computer software
  • Knowledge of department organization, procedures, and operating details
  • Knowledge of facilities, equipment, and staffing needs for programs and events
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively
  • Ability to organize and direct a variety of community programs
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • Ability to plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise staff
  • Ability to speak before groups
  • Ability to develop program-related policies and procedures
  • Ability to compile and prepare grant funding requests

Job Duties

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development, youth employment, or other community service activities and programs
  • Design, evaluate, and recommend continuance, modification, or cancellation of programs and activities
  • Determine facility, equipment, scheduling, and staffing requirements for programs and events
  • Coordinate departmental activities with other departments or outside agencies
  • Provide information and referrals to community members about available programs
  • Provide workshop instruction and in-service training for staff
  • Prepare and maintain reports, records, and memoranda related to assigned programs or facilities
  • Prepare and compile materials for grant funding
  • Coordinate and conduct recruitments
  • Make oral presentations to groups or boards
  • Develop and coordinate fund-raising events
  • Supervise recreation leaders, volunteers, and assigned personnel
  • Manage and operate sports facilities or neighborhood community centers
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and agencies
  • Interview, select, evaluate, and oversee program participants and activities
  • Perform related duties as required
