Job Requirements

  • Two years of leadership experience in recreation, education, youth development, child care, special events, or community service settings
  • Successful completion of college-level courses in recreation, education, child development, or related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis
  • Possession of valid California Class C Driver License at time of appointment
  • Ability to pass physical, criminal background check, drug test, and tuberculosis screening
  • Completion of Mandatory Reporter training within two weeks of employment
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and be on-call
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks including walking, standing, lifting up to 20 pounds
  • Compliance with child-care and elder-care qualifications as applicable

  • Knowledge of recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development, or community service activities
  • Principles of supervision and staff training
  • First aid and safety practices
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Common computer software applications
  • Organization and operating procedures of the department
  • Facility and staffing requirements for community programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Organize and direct various community programs
  • Maintain cooperative relationships
  • Plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise personnel
  • Develop program policies and procedures
  • Compile grant funding requests

Job Duties

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development, youth employment, or community service programs
  • Design, evaluate, and recommend continuation, modification, or cancellation of programs
  • Determine facility, equipment, scheduling, and staffing needs for programs and events
  • Coordinate activities with other departments and external agencies
  • Provide information and referrals via brochures, flyers, and promotional materials
  • Provide workshops and training to lower-level staff
  • Prepare and maintain reports, records, and grant materials
  • Conduct recruitments for part-time and seasonal positions
  • Make presentations to groups or boards
  • Develop and coordinate fundraising events
  • Supervise recreation leaders, volunteers, and other personnel
  • Manage and operate sports facilities or community centers
  • Respond to public and agency inquiries
  • Interview, select, evaluate program participants
  • Perform related duties as required
