Job Description
Howmet Aerospace Structures Systems, located at 1600 Harvard Avenue, is a specialized forging facility and part of Howmet Aerospace Inc., a leading global provider of advanced engineered solutions for the aerospace and transportation industries. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Howmet Aerospace boasts $7.4 billion in revenue in 2024 and focuses primarily on manufacturing jet engine components, aerospace fastening systems, titanium structural parts, and forged wheels. The company plays a pivotal role in advancing fuel efficiency and lightweighting technologies, directly contributing to the success of its customers while making a positive environmental and social impact worldwide. Howmet Aerospace is committed to sustainability and corporate responsibility as articulated in its 2024 Environmental Social and Governance report. The company values creating inclusive work environments and is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer, ensuring all qualified applicants are considered regardless of race, color, religion, gender identity, or disability status.
The Operations Supervisor role at Howmet Aerospace Structures Systems is a vital leadership position within the Operations Department, designed to provide first-level authority and direct supervision over hourly manufacturing teams. Reporting to an Area Manager, the Operations Supervisor is responsible for guiding, coaching, and directing employees to ensure safety, productivity, and quality standards are consistently met. This role involves close interaction with multiple levels of personnel within the Operations and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Departments, as well as collaboration with planners, schedulers, and external vendors to maintain smooth production workflows.
The Operations Supervisor will monitor performance metrics and implement corrective actions to meet or exceed production goals, including safety compliance, on-time delivery, and labor optimization. Problem-solving to identify root causes and eliminate waste is a key component of the job, ensuring continuous improvement in operational processes through lean manufacturing practices such as 5S, standardized work, work balance, product flow, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The supervisor also manages labor relations, including contract administration, grievance handling, and resolving employee concerns.
This position demands a proactive leader who can communicate effectively, motivate personnel, and maintain operational momentum while managing resources efficiently. Additional responsibilities include maintaining quality assurance records, overseeing timekeeping accuracy for payroll, and managing operational expense orders. The role requires engaging in heavy physical activity in a shared work environment that spans a shop floor requiring personal protective equipment and an office space. A flexible work schedule is necessary, with occasional weekend work as requested.
Success in this role requires a high school diploma or GED, along with a minimum of three years of supervisory experience in a heavy manufacturing environment. Preferred candidates will hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or business disciplines, possess strong communication and delegation skills, advanced interpersonal abilities to influence teams, and demonstrated expertise in problem-solving, systems thinking, project management, and lean manufacturing principles. This role is ideal for leaders passionate about driving manufacturing excellence, maintaining safety standards, and fostering a collaborative, goal-oriented workplace culture at one of the aerospace industry's key players.
