Job Description
NARA Northwest (NARA NW) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to serving Native American and Alaska Native communities by providing culturally appropriate education, physical and mental health services, as well as substance abuse treatment. Established as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), NARA NW operates with a deep mission to empower individuals and families in these communities to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. With more than 450 employees working across various programs—including medical and dental care, addiction treatment, housing assistance, and community enrichment initiatives—NARA NW emphasizes creating a supportive environment where employees are valued and respected. The organization prioritizes cultural sensitivity and holistic care, aiming to blend traditional knowledge and modern medical practices to best serve the needs of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and others seeking help.
The Prep Cook/Dishwasher role is based at the Adult Residential facility located at 17645 NW Saint Helens Hwy, Portland, OR. This is an in-person, non-exempt position with a work schedule of Sunday through Thursday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. The hourly wage range for this opportunity is $21.00 to $23.10, reflecting the organization's commitment to offering competitive compensation for its employees.
This entry-level position focuses primarily on dishwashing duties, ensuring that all dish and food preparation equipment meet cleanliness standards necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the kitchen. Once dishwashing tasks are complete, the role transitions into assisting with food preparation and serving cafeteria-style meals to up to 70 clients. This role is intended to provide a pathway for motivated individuals to grow into a Cook position within the organization, offering valuable experience in a culturally respectful environment.
As a Prep Cook/Dishwasher at NARA NW, you will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining areas, contributing directly to the health and well-being of clients. Key responsibilities involve adhering to all policies and procedures set forth by NARA NW and abiding by local, state, county, and federal guidelines regarding food safety and workplace conduct. A significant part of the role centers on food preparation tasks such as prepping ingredients and assisting with meal service, which helps ensure clients receive nourishing and timely meals.
NARA NW values collaboration and professional boundaries, expecting all employees to work effectively within teams and to interact respectfully with clients and community members. The organization offers comprehensive training and development opportunities to support your growth, emphasizing continuous learning and the chance to contribute positively to a mission-driven workplace.
Employees at NARA NW enjoy a robust benefits package that includes affordable medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, disability coverage, paid holidays, sick time, paid time off, and participation in a 401(k) retirement plan with matching contributions. Benefits eligibility begins the first of the month following the date of hire, supporting employee well-being and stability from early on in employment. NARA NW's workplace culture promotes sobriety and maintains a drug- and alcohol-free policy, reflecting its commitment to health and healing in the communities it serves.
Joining NARA NW as a Prep Cook/Dishwasher offers an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about contributing to the welfare of Native American and Alaska Native populations and those seeking to develop culinary skills in a supportive, culturally inclusive setting. The organization fosters a respectful and empowering atmosphere where employees are encouraged to grow professionally and personally, all while helping make a tangible difference in lives every day.
