Felton Institute is a renowned social service organization committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals and communities by offering more than 60 innovative and evidence-informed programs. These programs encompass crucial areas such as mental health services, support for the unhoused population, early childhood care and education, assistance for individuals impacted by the justice system, transitional age youth programs, and services for aging adults. The organization stands out by integrating the latest scientific research with cultural sensitivity, ensuring that the programs are both effective and relevant to the needs of the communities served. Felton Institute fosters a dynamic, challenging, and supportive work environment where professional development is highly encouraged and staff members are empowered with the skills and knowledge that advance their careers.

Within this impactful organization, the Bayview Multi-Service Resource Drop-In Center operates under the Felton Institute’s umbrella to provide vital support to individuals experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. This program is designed to serve as a safe haven offering numerous services including free meals, hot showers, laundry facilities, substance abuse programs, job search assistance, and housing support. The center operates with a sense of community and respect, guided by Peer Advisors who understand the unique needs of the clients and help them navigate San Francisco’s Homeless Response System effectively. A nightly resting program ensures safety, cleanliness, and peace for vulnerable clients. The center also offers opportunities for relaxation and social engagement, creating an environment where clients feel valued and supported.

The open Full-Time Prep Cook position is a crucial role within the Mother Brown’s Food Program at this drop-in center. This role involves assisting the kitchen team in meal preparation and food service, operating under the supervision of the Head Chef on shift. The Prep Cook ensures that all meal preparation activities comply with stringent health and safety standards as per Food Safety Guidelines. Responsibilities include washing and sterilizing dishes, pots, pans, and small kitchen appliances, cleaning the kitchen post-preparation, and maintaining food supply inventory, particularly for emergency earthquake preparedness.

The Prep Cook is integral to maintaining a clean, organized kitchen environment where food storage areas, countertops, and shelves are tidily managed daily. This role demands a strong team-oriented approach, reliability, and a commitment to hygiene and food safety standards. Candidates must have at least two years of food service experience, preferably in an institutional setting, with proficiency in English communication. The position requires willingness to obtain a Food Handler’s Certification and ongoing participation in health, safety, and nutrition training. Physical ability is necessary for lifting items weighing 20-30 pounds, sometimes as part of a team lift.

The job offers a non-exempt hourly wage of $25.00, full medical and dental coverage fully paid by the company, a health reimbursement card, paid personal, vacation, and sick time off, and participation in a 403B retirement plan with company matching. This union-represented position reports directly to the Program Manager and adheres to SEIU Local 1021’s collective bargaining agreement. The Prep Cook role represents an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about combining culinary skills with community service in a supportive and mission-driven workplace where their efforts contribute directly to improving lives and fostering community well-being.
