The Prep Cook position at Hive Bakery & Cafe is an intermediate, part-time role based in West Palm Beach. This job is vital to the kitchen team by ensuring that all ingredient preparation is done accurately and efficiently according to the bakery’s recipes, procedures, and high-quality standards. As a Prep Cook, you will be responsible for washing, chopping, measuring, and organizing ingredients needed for daily kitchen operations. Additionally, this role involves maintaining proper labeling and dating of ingredients to guarantee freshness, as well as supporting other kitchen staff such as line cooks and bakers by prepping all necessary components before service. Operational duties include maintaining cleanliness and organization of the prep station and storage areas, safely handling kitchen equipment, and completing opening and closing tasks following standard operating procedures.

Training and ongoing learning are essential parts of this role, as you will need to master Hive Bakery & Cafe’s recipes, portion standards, and food safety protocols. Communication with management and team members is crucial to address any prep needs or shortages promptly and maintain a cooperative team environment. The role demands flexibility, including working weekends and holidays, and a consistent, punctual attendance to contribute to the smooth functioning of the kitchen operations. The Prep Cook is also accountable for upholding sanitation and safety standards at all times, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and contributing to a clean and safe workplace.

Job Requirements

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and carry short distances
  • able to stand and walk during 8 hour shifts
  • able to work closely with other staff at a fast pace, under pressure, maintaining quality standards and often in confined areas
  • able to bend, stoop, and wipe
  • able to work at approximately 36-inch table/stove and reach in approximately 36 inches
  • understand hazards such as cuts, burns, slips, trips, and falls
  • able to complete additional tasks assigned by management
  • able to meet all standards for safe food handling

Job Duties

  • Prepare ingredients according to recipes, procedures, and prep lists
  • wash, chop, measure, and organize ingredients to ensure smooth kitchen operations
  • label and date all prepped items and ensure freshness
  • maintain assigned par levels of prepped ingredients
  • support the line cooks and bakers by ensuring all prep is ready for service and production
  • maintain, stock, restock, clean, and organize prep station and storage areas
  • complete opening, side, and closing duties in a timely manner following established standard operating procedures
