Job Description
San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) is a public transit agency serving Stockton, California, dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services to the community. RTD plays a vital role in facilitating mobility for residents, supporting regional economic growth, and reducing environmental impact through its comprehensive transit network. The agency is committed to maintaining a high standard of service and ensuring that all facilities and amenities meet cleanliness and safety standards to enhance the rider experience and public satisfaction.
The RTD custodian position offers full-time, regular employment with an annual salary range of $52,448.86 to $55,071.33. This role is critical to the operational success of the transit district as custodians maintain the cleanliness and orderly condition of RTD’s facilities, both interiors and exteriors. Under general supervision, custodians are tasked with performing a variety of custodial and minor building maintenance duties necessary to uphold a safe and welcoming environment for passengers, staff, and visitors.
The custodian’s responsibilities include cleaning floors utilizing techniques such as sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing various floor types including concrete, linoleum, tile, and wood. They vacuum carpets and rugs across multiple areas such as offices, shops, dining rooms, hallways, ramps, and stairways. Daily duties also incorporate dusting and cleaning walls, furniture, and woodwork, with specific instructions to exclude electronic equipment. Restroom sanitation is a vital part of the role, involving washing, scrubbing, disinfecting surfaces, and replenishing supplies to maintain hygiene standards.
Custodians ensure the cleanliness of windows, door glass, drinking fountains, metal works such as hand railings, and door panels. They maintain custodial closets and storage areas in an organized manner and perform routine building maintenance tasks such as furniture moving, light replacement, air filter changes, furniture assembly, and minor repairs. Security duties including turning off lights, securing windows, and locking doors are also part of the shift responsibilities.
Outside the buildings, custodians clean the exterior premises including passenger loading zones, waiting areas, trash removal, weed and brush clearance, and graffiti removal, though not including tree trimming. Their work encompasses all facility-related amenities such as bus shelters, sidewalks, benches, and trash cans, keeping these areas orderly and safe for public use. The role requires operating various tools such as blowers, weed eaters, brush trimmers, floor scrubbers, and pressure washers with recovery units. Custodians are expected to maintain this equipment and report any safety or maintenance hazards immediately.
RTD provides a supportive work environment with a commitment to accommodating individuals with disabilities who can perform the essential job functions. The position demands both physical and mental capability, requiring the custodians to lift and move materials up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 100 pounds. It also involves physical activities such as climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, sitting, and using hands for fine motor tasks. The mental demands include communication skills, the ability to follow directions, problem-solving, meeting deadlines, and working collaboratively with supervisors and coworkers.
The collective bargaining agreement governs the shift schedules, which may include day or swing shifts subject to change based on operational needs. RTD places high importance on professionalism, positive demeanor, and effective interpersonal skills in maintaining a collaborative and customer-focused work atmosphere.
The San Joaquin Regional Transit District values its employees and offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance with coverage for dependents, life insurance, sick leave accrual between 3 to 12 days annually depending on tenure, paid vacation ranging from 1 to 6 weeks based on classification and length of service, and retirement benefits under the Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). The hiring process includes application submission, possible written assessments, verification of application information, and pre-employment screening that adheres to Department of Transportation physical and substance abuse testing standards.
This custodian role is a chance to contribute to the public transit community by ensuring that RTD’s facilities remain clean, safe, and welcoming, playing an essential part in the overall rider experience and daily operations at the transit district.
