The Nutrition Support Services (NSS) within CPS plays a vital role in supporting student health and wellness by providing nutritious meals to students at no charge. These meals meet stringent USDA Child Nutrition Program standards and are available during school days, summer programs, and select after-school hours. NSS is crucial in ensuring that students receive balanced nutrition to help them focus, learn, and grow.
The Porter position within Nutrition Support Services is key to maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of school kitchens, ensuring a hygienic environment for meal preparation and service. Reporting to the School Dining Manager, the Porter will handle the daily upkeep of kitchen areas, the operation of dishwashing equipment, and assistance in food service operations. This union position is non-exempt and involves hands-on responsibilities critical to the smooth operation of school meal programs.
The role requires assembling and transporting soiled dishes, trays, and utensils; operating dishwashing machines; replenishing dinnerware; assisting in food service; maintaining storeroom order and inventory rotation; cleaning kitchen, dining, and storage areas; and ensuring compliance with sanitation and hygiene standards. The Porter is also responsible for implementing new NSS programs and completing required USDA training. The position demands physical stamina and the ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment supporting the health and well-being of thousands of students.

Job Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid Food Handlers Certificate or Chicago Department of Public Health Food Service Managers Certificate
- Minimum of one year of previous work experience or equivalent training
- Knowledge of basic sanitation principles and food handling
- Basic math skills
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects between 25 to 100 lbs
- Ability to perform physical activities including standing, stooping, crouching, climbing, bending, reaching, handling, and fingering objects
- Ability to work in varying temperature environments
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Must establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire and continue residency during employment
- Must be resident of Illinois
Job Qualifications
- Must possess and maintain a valid Food Handlers Certificate or a Chicago Department of Public Health Food Service Managers Certificate
- One year of previous work experience or an equivalent combination of related training and experience
- Knowledge of basic sanitation principles and practices
- Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and use of fractions
- Ability to handle all types of food safely
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Basic skills in performing sanitation duties
- Capability to lift between 25-40 lbs frequently and 50-100 lbs occasionally
- Ability to stand for long periods, stoop, crouch, climb, bend, reach, handle, and finger objects
- Ability to move safely and efficiently
- Ability to taste and smell to identify flavors and odors
- Ability to visually identify and distinguish colors
- Ability to work in environments with temperature extremes
Job Duties
- Assembles and transports soiled dishes, trays, and utensils from dining areas
- Operates dishwashing machines and replenishes dinnerware items
- Assists in serving food to customers
- Fulfills storeroom requisitions and maintains storeroom order
- Responsible for the rotation of stock
- Lifts and carries bulk commodities to designated areas
- Sweeps and mops kitchen, serving areas, storerooms, lunchrooms, and restrooms
- Washes pots, pans, shelves, tables, and walls
- Cleans and sanitizes countertops, work areas, storage areas, and food service equipment
- Scrapes dishes and trays
- De-limes dishwashing machines as necessary
- Follows departmental personal hygiene requirements
- Assists in the implementation of new programs within Nutrition Support Services
- Completes all USDA mandated training hours
