Job Requirements

  • Must have a current third-class medical certificate or higher
  • Valid State or Federal ID with picture
  • Age between 18 and 50 years old
  • Fluent in English
  • Energetic with stamina to wear oxygen masks for several hours
  • Physically able to remain calm during simulated altitude decompression
  • BMI less than or equal to 40
  • Hemoglobin greater than or equal to 12.0 g/dL and hematocrit greater than or equal to 37% on study day
  • Non-smoker and non-vaper
  • No respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD
  • No recent respiratory infections within two weeks prior
  • No neuromuscular, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension or Raynaud's syndrome
  • Able to perform 15 minutes of vigorous exercise
  • No history of corrective eye surgery or detached retina
  • No disqualifying medical conditions such as pregnancy, heart problems, diabetes requiring medication, claustrophobia, or recent surgery
  • No painted fingernails or finger coloration
  • No facial hair including beards or mustaches

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum of one year relevant experience or training
  • Ability to understand and follow written and spoken English instructions
  • Physically able to participate in rapid simulated egress from aircraft
  • Current third-class medical certificate or higher

Job Duties

  • Attend hypobaric research events from start to finish
  • Undergo anthropomorphic measurements prior to each event
  • Maintain BMI less than or equal to 40 on study day
  • Complete pre-flight pure oxygen breathing protocol
  • Perform vigorous exercise at 75% maximal oxygen consumption for 15 minutes
  • Provide blood samples and complete questionnaires
  • Wear oxygen masks and remain calm during altitude decompression simulations
