Job Description
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is a vital U.S. government agency responsible for regulating all aspects of civil aviation in the country. Within the FAA, the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) conducts critical research and medical evaluation to ensure the safety and well-being of aviators and aerospace personnel. CAMI’s Aerospace Medical Research Division, specifically the Environmental Physiology Division (AAM-631), plays a pioneering role in understanding the physiological effects of flight, altitude, and other aerospace environmental factors. Working under the FAA’s regulatory framework, CAMI supports various research initiatives that impact aviation safety standards nationwide.

Job Requirements
- Current third-class medical certificate or higher
- valid state or federal ID with picture
- age between 18 and 50 years
- fluent in English
- energetic and physically stamina to wear oxygen masks for extended periods
- BMI less than 40
- hemoglobin greater than 12.0 g/dL and hematocrit greater than 37% on the day of altitude chamber flight
- non-smoker and non-vaper
- no respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD
- no acute respiratory infection within two weeks prior to participation
- no neuromuscular or peripheral vascular diseases
- no hypertension or Raynaud's Phenomenon
- no physical limitations precluding vigorous exercise or altitude decompression events
- no history of corrective eye surgery or detached retina
- no disqualifying medical or physical conditions including pregnancy, heart problems, chest pains, diabetes requiring medication, claustrophobia, recent surgery, or other chronic diseases
- must not have painted fingernails, finger coloration, or facial hair during study
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- minimum of one year relevant experience or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
- able to understand and follow directions in written and spoken English
- physically able to participate in rapid simulated aircraft egress without endangering self or others
Job Duties
- Attend hypobaric research events from start to finish
- have anthropomorphic measurements taken prior to each event
- maintain a BMI less than 40 on the study day
- complete pre-flight pure oxygen breathing protocol with vigorous exercise
- participate in simulated altitude decompression events
- provide blood samples for analysis
- comply with all safety and appearance protocols during research events
