Job Requirements

  • Current third-class medical certificate or higher
  • Valid state or federal ID with picture
  • Age between 18 and 50 years
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Energetic with stamina to wear oxygen masks for several hours
  • Physically able to participate in simulated altitude decompression without endangering self or others
  • BMI less than or equal to 40
  • Hemoglobin values greater than or equal to 12.0 g/dL
  • Hematocrit values greater than or equal to 37%
  • Non-smoker and non-vaper
  • No respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD
  • No acute upper respiratory infection or respiratory issues within two weeks prior
  • No neuromuscular disease, neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, or Raynaud's Phenomenon
  • No medical or physical limitations precluding vigorous exercise or altitude decompression events
  • No history of corrective eye surgery or detached retina
  • Free from disqualifying medical conditions including pregnancy, hypo/hypertension, heart problems, chest pains, difficulty breathing, serious bodily disability, severe dizziness spells, diabetes requiring medication, claustrophobia, recent surgery, or chronic disease
  • No painted fingernails, finger coloration, or facial hair when reporting to facility

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum of one year relevant experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Able to understand and follow directions presented in written and spoken English
  • Physically able to participate in rapid simulated egress from an aircraft
  • Demonstrated stamina and energy to withstand prolonged oxygen mask wear
  • Current third-class medical certificate or higher
  • Non-smoker and non-vaper
  • Ability to remain calm and control oneself in simulated altitude decompression events

Job Duties

  • Attends hypobaric research events from start to finish
  • Have anthropomorphic measurements taken prior to each event, ensuring BMI is less than or equal to 40 on study day
  • Completes a pre-flight pure oxygen breathing protocol combined with vigorous exercise to minimize risk of altitude decompression sickness
  • Provides blood samples for hemoglobin and hematocrit analysis before chamber flights
  • Instruments with various sensors and wears oxygen masks during experimental sessions
  • Participates in rapid simulated egress procedures without compromising safety
  • Completes pre- and post-trial measurements and questionnaires as required
