Job Requirements
- Full-time employment, average 40 hours per week
- Exempt under Fair Labor Standards Act
- Ability to operate a golf cart safely
- Ability to work indoors in greenhouse and outdoors in varying weather conditions for up to 8 hours
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, twist, and stoop continuously
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks including pushing, pulling, and manual labor
- Ability to safely climb ladders
- Ability to operate heavy machinery and small power equipment safely and responsibly
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Botany, or related field
- Three years’ experience working in a conservatory or greenhouse
- Valid driver’s license and proof of car insurance
- Ability to obtain VA Registered Pesticide Applicator’s license within six months
- Basic working knowledge of botanical nomenclature
- Knowledge and experience with tropical and succulent plants preferred
- Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays
Job Duties
- Oversee day-to-day operation and care of the Perry Conservatory
- Supervise and direct horticulture staff including hiring, firing, and disciplining
- Monitor environmental controls including temperature, humidity, ventilation, and lighting to ensure optimal plant growth
- Teach classes, lead tours, give talks, write articles, and participate in outreach events
- Develop and maintain extensive knowledge of plant collections and assist in acquisition of new plants
- Assist with Garden-wide special events and perform other assigned duties
