Job Description
Holiday Market is a renowned, family-owned gourmet grocery store and bakery located in Royal Oak, MI. Established in 1954 as a modest neighborhood butcher shop and specialty store by Tom and Janet Violante, Holiday Market has expanded significantly over the decades. Today, it occupies an impressive 60,000 square feet space, serving a large customer base with a dedication to quality products and friendly neighborhood service. Managed by the second generation, Tom Jr. and Gina Mangold, the store has consistently been recognized as one of the best independent gourmet markets in Metro Detroit. Awards from publications such as HOUR Detroit underline its reputation for excellence, especially noted as the best place to purchase wedding and specialty cakes. The company’s guiding principles emphasize a customer-focused approach while strongly valuing its employees, creating an environment where both customers and staff feel prioritized and appreciated.
The Pastry Chef role at Holiday Market offers an exciting opportunity for a passionate culinary professional to join this acclaimed establishment on a full-time basis. The position starts with a pay rate of $21.00 per hour and includes a range of benefits such as flexible schedules, paid time off, comprehensive health plans, and a 401(k) matching program. This role is vital in continuing the tradition of excellence in the bakery department, tasked with inspiring and leading the bakery team through innovative pastry creations and exceptional customer service. The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader and hands-on chef who loves what they do and motivates others to share that passion. Responsibilities include developing and enhancing the pastry menu, standardizing operations for consistent quality, and creating cost-effective, creative packaging solutions. The Pastry Chef will also be responsible for training, motivating, and mentoring the team, managing counter sales and production schedules, and focusing primarily on baking and pastries given that the cake team is already solid and well-established.
This role requires a candidate with a strong background in retail bakery operations and at least five years of pastry chef management experience. Physical capabilities for prolonged standing and lifting are necessary to meet the demands of the job. Daily duties balance hands-on baking with administrative tasks, requiring efficient time management skills. Working Monday to Friday with some weekend availability during non-peak retail hours, the position offers the benefits of operating within a highly trafficked bakery that sees over 15,000 customers weekly, providing substantial exposure and opportunity to showcase your craft. Holiday Market’s team is collaborative, supportive, and committed to upholding the high standards that have made the market a beloved staple in the community since the 1950s. This Pastry Chef role is perfect for a dynamic culinary artist ready to leave their mark by contributing to an established institution dedicated to quality and customer satisfaction.
