Job Description
Michaels is a leading arts and crafts retail company headquartered in Irving, Texas. Established in 1973, Michaels operates over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada, making it the premier destination for creative and celebratory products. Michaels also owns Artistree, a manufacturer specializing in custom and specialty framing merchandise. The brand has built a reputation for nurturing creativity by providing a wide range of craft supplies, party solutions, and artistic tools. Michaels is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and vibrant community where creativity and celebration go hand in hand. It embraces a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and the well-being of its team members, offering competitive benefits and professional growth opportunities.
Within this dynamic and fast-paced retail environment, the Event Coordinator role at the Richmond-Broad store in Virginia is integral to delivering engaging, memorable experiences for customers. This is a full-time position that combines creative event planning with exceptional customer service and operational responsibilities. The Event Coordinator is primarily focused on planning, coordinating, and facilitating multiple events, including children’s birthday parties and craft classes, ensuring these gatherings are stress-free, enjoyable, and foster a sense of fun and creativity for guests of all ages, from children to seniors.
In this role, the Event Coordinator handles the full spectrum of event-related duties, from initial communication with clients to executing party add-ons such as goody bags and balloons according to company standards. They actively engage with participants during the events, demonstrating craft projects, performing face painting, and orchestrating activities that promote a festive atmosphere. Administrative tasks such as answering emails, making phone calls, and managing paperwork related to events are also essential components of the position. Flexibility is key, as the coordinator must adapt plans based on client feedback and needs while preparing backup plans to ensure smooth event execution.
Beyond event management, the role requires delivering excellent customer service by assisting shoppers in locating products and providing solutions to their needs. The Event Coordinator is responsible for ensuring fast, friendly checkout experiences, educating customers about loyalty programs and credit card benefits, and supporting omni-channel retail processes like Buy Online Pickup In Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS). Operational tasks such as truck unloading, stocking, merchandise presentation, and adherence to store recovery standards are vital for maintaining the brand’s promises.
The position demands exceptional interpersonal skills, creativity, and a positive attitude to interact effectively with a diverse clientele and team members. The coordinator must uphold company standards regarding cleanliness, safety, and compliance with policies and regulations. Participation in maintaining a clean, inviting store environment through daily housekeeping and supporting shrink and safety programs is expected.
Michaels values energetic and enthusiastic personalities, strong organizational skills, and a passion for working with children’s events. Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal, written, and nonverbal communication skills and be adept at creative problem-solving. Retail or customer service experience is required, with a preference for those who bring a background in event coordination or related roles.
Physically, the role involves standing for extended periods, moving throughout the store, regular bending, lifting heavy boxes, reaching high shelves using ladders, and working in a retail setting that includes climate-controlled public areas and stockrooms. Work hours may include nights, weekends, and early mornings.
Michaels emphasizes inclusion and accessibility, providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals to support their successful employment and participation. This commitment aligns with Michaels’ status as an Equal Opportunity Employer dedicated to serving all team members and customers inclusively, encouraging innovation, creativity, and collaboration to inspire better outcomes together.
