Job Description
The Michaels Companies Inc. is a premier destination for arts, crafts, framing, floral, and seasonal products, operating over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels has established itself as the leading North American retailer for creative projects and celebrations. In addition to its physical stores, Michaels maintains a robust online presence through Michaels.com and Michaels.ca, catering to creative enthusiasts of all skill levels. The company also owns Artistree, a manufacturer specializing in custom and specialty framing merchandise, reinforcing its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction in the creative retail market.
This role is based in a Michaels store located in Richmond, Virginia, specifically on Center Parkway. The opportunity involves working as an event coordinator and customer service team member within the retail environment. The position includes part-time and full-time opportunities and offers a competitive salary reflective of industry standards. Michaels prioritizes the well-being of its team members by providing a comprehensive range of benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, tuition assistance, and generous employee discounts.
As an event coordinator at Michaels, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and facilitating events such as children’s birthday parties and craft activities to ensure guests enjoy a stress-free, fun, and engaging experience. This vital role involves interacting with clients of various ages, ranging from young children to older adults, promoting an environment of creativity and enjoyment. You will lead craft project demonstrations, conduct face painting sessions, and organize additional party features like goody bags and balloons, adhering strictly to company standards.
Customer experience is a key focus of this role, where you will assist shoppers in finding products, help them navigate the store effectively, and ensure a fast and friendly checkout process. Enrolling customers in loyalty programs, explaining benefits, and facilitating omnichannel shopping services such as Buy Online Pickup In Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS) are all part of your customer engagement duties. You will also participate in operational tasks including truck unloading, stocking, merchandising, and maintaining store recovery standards to uphold the company’s brand promises.
The role demands excellent organizational and communication skills, alongside the ability to adapt quickly to client feedback and resolve issues efficiently. You will be performing administrative duties such as email correspondence, phone communications, and paperwork related to ongoing events. Maintaining the store's cleanliness and safety standards before, during, and after events is essential for creating a welcoming environment.
Michaels seeks energetic, enthusiastic individuals with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under stress and in diverse teams. Prior experience working with children’s events and retail customer service is preferred. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the store, handle bending, lifting, reaching, and sometimes using ladders to access high shelves. The workplace environment is a dynamic public retail setting with climate-controlled areas, occasional outdoor tasks, and a frame shop equipped with specialized tools.
Michaels is committed to equal employment opportunities and inclusion, ensuring reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities. This role offers an exciting chance to join a company dedicated to fueling creativity and celebration, with substantial growth potential and a supportive work culture focused on innovation and teamwork.
