The Part Time Recreation Specialist position at Ivory Baker Recreation Center offers a fantastic opportunity for individuals interested in contributing to Mecklenburg County’s renowned recreational services. This role involves planning, organizing, and implementing various programs which serve a wide range of populations, including youth, teens, adults, and seniors. Program areas may include arts and crafts, 4H/cooperative extension programs, social events, fitness activities, summer and day camps, health and wellness initiatives, and afterschool programs. In addition to active program management, the Recreation Specialist will engage in marketing efforts, resource and budget planning, and quality assurance to optimize program outcomes and participant satisfaction. This position plays a key role in forging and maintaining meaningful relationships with diverse community members and stakeholders, supporting inclusivity and cultural competence in program design and delivery. The part-time role requires approximately 29 hours per week and may entail working evenings and rotating weekends based on facility needs. The hourly pay range is between $20.71 and $27.18. Job Requirements

  • No experience required
  • Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Six months of prior work experience as a temporary or part-time employee with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, or Associates or Bachelor's degree with two years of related experience, or four years of similar related experience
  • Proficiency in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License and County Driving Privileges
  • CPR/First Aid certification

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Hands-on experience leading youth recreation programs
  • Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License and County Driving Privileges
  • CPR/First Aid certification

Job Duties

  • Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility
  • Supervise children involved in after-school, summer camp, child watch or other recreational programs
  • Provide customer service and handling of funds in a recreation center or park facility through telephone, emails, web site, social media and walk in patrons and customers for information, program registration, center daily use and rentals
  • Ensure safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary
  • Enforce rules and regulations
  • Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas
  • Referee at various sports activities
  • May provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper or linesperson at games
  • Handles inquiries and complaints from public
  • Some programs may require driving a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location
  • Assist with department events and field trips
  • May serve as manager on duty if the Sr Rec Specialist is not available
