Job Description

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a prominent public research university located in Richmond, Virginia. The position is an hourly wage role focused on campus facilities management, specifically within housekeeping and custodial services.

The housekeeping and custodial role is pivotal in upholding the cleanliness and orderliness of various campus facilities, including event spaces, dining areas, offices, and outdoor areas. This position is essential personnel, which means that it requires a dependable individual who can work during university closings and inclement weather if necessary. The work schedule includes Monday through Friday shifts with rotating weekends, days, and evenings, providing a dynamic and varied work environment.

The responsibilities include a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, and floor care on various surfaces. The individual must pay close attention to detail and ensure all areas meet the expected standards of cleanliness and safety. This includes using appropriate signage to notify members of the university when work is in progress to maintain safety. In addition to routine housekeeping activities, the role involves preparing for special events by ensuring event spaces are clean and well-maintained.

An important part of the position is the ability to manage consumable stock levels, ensuring that supplies such as cleaning chemicals and equipment are adequately maintained and safely handled according to training. The candidate will be expected to report damages or disturbances to supervisors promptly. They must be capable of working independently and maintaining high performance without direct supervision, as well as being customer-oriented and friendly to campus community members.

Job Duties

  • Attend to all facilities with integrity and attention to detail
  • create a clean and orderly environment
  • perform a variety of cleaning activities such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and trash removal
  • ensure all rooms are cared for and inspected according to standards
  • porter, clean and deep clean event spaces, dining areas, offices and outdoor spaces at all USC facilities
  • perform floor work on a variety of surfaces
  • notify supervisors of any damage, deficits and disturbances
  • check stock levels of all consumables and replace them when appropriate
  • perform housekeeping duties during special events
  • keep storage areas and carts well-stocked, clean, and tidy
  • perform housekeeping tasks to ensure sanitation and cleanliness using standard cleaning methods and appropriate housekeeping equipment
  • ensure member's safety when performing work and use appropriate signage to notify members of work being performed
  • obtain appropriate training to ensure proper handling of chemicals and equipment
  • perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
