Established in 1855, Penn State has grown into a comprehensive university with multiple campuses, dedicated faculty, and an expansive network of students and alumni. The university prides itself on fostering an inclusive environment where diversity, equity, and sustainability are integral to its mission and community engagement. Penn State also emphasizes student success and provides a variety of resources and employment opportunities to support its expansive campus population. This particular job opening is within the Penn State Housing and Food Services department, a division committed to delivering exceptional dining experiences alongside safe and sanitary living accommodations for students and staff. Their operations focus heavily on maintaining high standards of service, quality, and cleanliness across all dining venues on campus.
The Dining/Dishroom Attendant position is a vital support role within Penn State Housing and Food Services. As a Dining/Dishroom Attendant, you will be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of all pots, pans, utensils, and other kitchen wares used throughout the culinary and food service operations. This role supports the culinary team by maintaining a pristine and orderly environment, which is essential for delivering exceptional food services to the campus community. The daily tasks include operating ware-washing machinery, managing chemical use safely, and maintaining proper personal protective equipment usage while performing cleaning duties. Additionally, attendants help with restocking smallwares and condiments and may assist in the preparation of basic menu items or provide support across other dining service areas as needed.
This position is ideal for entry-level candidates who thrive in fast-paced, high-volume environments and possess strong organizational skills along with a commitment to attention to detail and safety standards. You will be expected to perform cleaning and sanitation of food contact surfaces, floors, ceilings, and walls while ensuring that all areas conform to disciplined standards of sanitary maintenance. The work schedule offers multiple shifts primarily during weekdays and evenings, and is part-time with potential fluctuations depending on the academic calendar.
Penn State values diversity and inclusion and actively promotes a respectful and welcoming workplace where all employees can contribute meaningfully to their roles. The university requires compliance with its policies on nondiscrimination, equal opportunity, and background checks to uphold a secure and supportive educational environment. This role provides an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to contribute to a dynamic university dining environment while gaining valuable experience in sanitation and food service support within a respected academic institution.
