Job Description

Newington Public Schools is a public education institution committed to fostering an inclusive and culturally diverse workforce that reflects the racial, ethnic, and linguistic makeup of the community it serves. The district places a strong emphasis on equity and student achievement by embracing family and community engagement, culturally relevant organizational practices, a positive school climate, student-centered learning, a diverse and excellent teaching staff, equitable student access, and fiscal equity. This mission underpins all activities and hiring practices, aiming to cultivate a supportive and enriching environment for both students and staff alike.

The current opening is for part-time substitute and permanent part-time food service positions within Newington Public Schools' kitchens. This role plays a vital part in supporting the daily operations of school cafeterias by handling food preparation, serving, cashiering, and cleanup duties. The positions offer flexible hours, typically spanning 3.75 hours per day during school months, Monday through Friday, with a workday from around 10:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. This scheduling provides a great opportunity for individuals, especially those with school-age children, who prefer to work within the school calendar and benefit from holidays, weekends, and school vacation time off.

Starting pay rates vary depending on employment status and school level, with substitutes earning $17.51 per hour, elementary part-time employees earning $19.29 per hour, and middle/high school part-time employees earning $17.95 per hour. Upon successful training and placement in a permanent role, pay rates increase accordingly. Although prior kitchen experience is preferred, it is not mandatory, highlighting the school district's openness to training and developing motivated candidates. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and maintain effective communication and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Employees in these roles will benefit from a $100 uniform allowance, eligibility for a yearly bonus based on hours worked, and accrual of Connecticut Paid Sick Leave. While medical benefits are not provided, the stable and family-friendly working environment, coupled with competitive hourly wages and scheduled days off, offers compelling conditions for many applicants. A criminal background check is required for all new hires, ensuring a safe and secure workplace for all students and staff.

To apply, candidates must complete an application through the district's employment website rather than submitting emailed resumes. The district emphasizes a high standard for candidate engagement, especially around its values of diversity, equity, and community involvement, making this position ideal for candidates eager to contribute positively to a dynamic educational environment. Immediate positions are available, providing a timely chance for employment in a fun and caring work atmosphere.
