The Cashier role at Shoppers is a vital position responsible for delivering prompt and friendly service to customers while efficiently managing cash register operations. The position involves accurately handling product scanning, transactions, and money management including cash, checks, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) transactions, and promotional coupons. Cashiers are expected to maintain a customer-first attitude by greeting customers warmly, assisting them with their needs, addressing questions and concerns, and adhering to policies concerning sales of controlled items like tobacco and liquor as well as WIC and food stamp guidelines. A cashier will also support other store functions by organizing merchandise neatly, assisting courtesy personnel, and keeping the register area clean and well-stocked. The role demands thorough knowledge of store products, pricing, and promotional activities to ensure smooth transactions and customer satisfaction.

This role requires strong attention to detail, good judgment, and the ability to follow instructions accurately. Cashiers must be comfortable working varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and should be able to perform basic arithmetic calculations to manage transactions effectively. Job Requirements

  • Must be able to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions, deal with a few concrete variables
  • Must have the ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous cashier or customer service experience is an asset
  • Basic math skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Familiarity with retail point-of-sale systems is a plus

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • Operates cash register accurately and scans all product
  • Redeems promotional coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, receives cash, checks, EFT transactions, in-store charges and figures discounts, as well as counts back change, issues receipts and Catalina coupons
  • Places merchandise in cart in a neat, organized fashion
  • Assists courtesy personnel as needed
  • Answers customer questions and concerns and follows-up with appropriate personnel
  • Understands and follows local, state, and company policies on sales of tobacco and liquor
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC and food stamps
  • Required to know value, look-up numbers, department numbers, and features of items for which money is received
  • Stocks, faces and rotates merchandise, cleans shelves, understands shelf tags, knows location of merchandise in the store and also in the back room, and if available, takes customers to an item
  • Reviews weekly store ad to note price changes and sale items
  • Keeps register area clean and adheres to “5S” standards, ensures adequate supplies are ready and available, and helps maintain the store appearance
