This part-time position is focused on delivering excellent customer care and maintaining the high standards expected in the Fresh Foods department. The role involves a combination of product knowledge, food preparation skills, sales ability, and customer relations skills, all aimed at exceeding customer expectations. Employees in this role prepare, process, package, and stock fresh products while ensuring compliance with the company’s Fresh Foods standards. They interact directly with customers, assisting them with their shopping needs, answering questions, and providing information about products and promotions. Associates are expected to provide courteous, prompt, and helpful customer service at all times, acting as ambassadors of the Harris Teeter brand. The job includes tasks such as preparing bakery items like bread, rolls, muffins, pies, cakes, and cookies, as well as cooking and packaging poultry, pork, beef, and other meats. Associates must ensure proper food safety and sanitation standards are met. They are responsible for stocking shelves, unloading deliveries, rotating products to prevent waste, and merchandising displays effectively. Effective communication in English is essential for interacting with customers and co-workers, handling phone inquiries, and documenting orders or issues.

The role requires physical stamina to handle the demands of stocking, lifting, and working in varying temperature conditions typical of a grocery store environment. Adaptability, dependability, and teamwork are key qualities, as associates must handle multiple tasks, assist colleagues, and maintain a pleasant work atmosphere. Job Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands, reach, talk, hear, taste, and smell regularly

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One to three months related experience or equivalent education and experience
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and correspondence in English
  • Ability to write simple correspondence in English
  • Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Basic math skills including addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers and handling money and weight measurements
  • Ability to follow detailed but straightforward oral and written instructions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation
  • Successful completion of company training including food sanitation, customer service, safety, and product knowledge

Job Duties

  • Take excellent care of customers by satisfying their needs and exceeding expectations
  • Prepare, process, package, and stock products according to Fresh Foods standards
  • Provide courteous and prompt customer service on the sales floor and counters
  • Prepare and decorate bakery items and create party trays according to recipes and customer specifications
  • Bake, fry, broil, and roast meats according to standards
  • Price, date, wrap, and package products
  • Operate equipment to prepare and portion products accurately
  • Maintain clean and sanitary work areas and comply with health and safety regulations
  • Stock and merchandise products properly and process close-dated or damaged goods
  • Unload delivery trucks and reload salvage products
  • Communicate effectively in English with customers and associates
  • Answer telephones courteously and provide information
  • Assist in inventory and price change processes
  • Adapt to changing priorities and assist team members with daily tasks
  • Follow all company policies, safety standards, and food safety regulations
  • Maintain a positive image by dressing neatly and behaving ethically
  • Report accidents and safety hazards promptly
  • Take initiative and be a reliable and punctual team player
