Job Description
The City of Davis Parks and Community Services Department is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the natural beauty and recreational resources available to the local community. Located in the vibrant city of Davis, known for its commitment to environmental stewardship and quality of life, the department manages a diverse range of parks, playgrounds, sports fields, greenbelts, and civic spaces. Their mission focuses on providing safe, clean, and well-maintained facilities that encourage outdoor activities, promote community engagement, and support healthy, active lifestyles. Through the efforts of various skilled employees, including maintenance aides, the department ensures that public spaces remain inviting and accessible for residents and visitors alike. The City of Davis also embraces equal opportunity employment, advocating for diversity and inclusion, with a workforce committed to serving the community efficiently and respectfully.
The Maintenance Aide I/II position within the Parks Maintenance Division offers a temporary part-time employment opportunity with flexible hours ranging from approximately 20 to 40 hours per week, subject to a maximum of 1000 hours per fiscal year. Compensation is competitive at $16.55 to $18.27 per hour, reflecting the role's responsibilities and requirements. While this role does not provide benefits due to its temporary status, it offers an excellent chance for individuals interested in gaining or enhancing practical experience in park maintenance and groundskeeping operations.
The Maintenance Aide role encompasses a variety of fundamental tasks that contribute to the upkeep and beautification of parks, playgrounds, sports fields, landscaped areas, and other public facilities. Under the supervision and guidance of Park Maintenance Workers, Lead Workers, and Supervisors, Maintenance Aides perform essential labor, including landscaping activities such as planting, watering, weeding, trimming, and fertilizing lawns and flower beds. They assist with irrigation system repairs primarily through manual labor and operate small power tools like hedge clippers, weed eaters, and trimmers to maintain park aesthetics.
Additionally, the position involves general porter duties such as cleaning grounds, picking up debris, and disposing of waste materials to maintain a safe and pleasant environment. Maintenance Aides contribute to the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and the installation of recreational equipment like bleachers, backstops, and playground structures. The role requires physical resilience to perform heavy manual labor in outdoor environments that may expose workers to varying weather conditions, including heat, dust, pollen, and noise.
Candidates for this position must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid California Class C driver’s license, and possess sufficient education or training to read and write effectively. The job demands good communication, teamwork, and customer service skills, as employees frequently interact with the public, co-workers, and city staff. Furthermore, the position mandates adherence to safety standards, including wearing masks and maintaining social distancing as per current guidelines.
Overall, the Maintenance Aide I/II role offers an engaging work environment for individuals interested in outdoor labor, community service, and learning the practical skills necessary for park and recreational facility maintenance. It is ideal for those seeking temporary employment with flexible hours and the opportunity to contribute positively to the community's quality of life through hands-on work in beautiful outdoor settings.
