Job Description

The University of Michigan is a prestigious public research university located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Known for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and community service, the university operates a variety of departments and services aimed at supporting both its campus community and visitors. One of the key operational areas within the university is the Logistics, Transportation & Parking Services department, which is responsible for managing parking facilities, transportation, and related services to ensure smooth and efficient campus operations. This department plays a crucial role, especially on the Medical Campus, where managing parking needs in a high-traffic environment is essential to facilitate access for patients, staff, and visitors.

The University of Michigan is currently seeking a temporary Parking Attendant to join the Parking Services team primarily on the Medical Campus. This temporary full-time position offers a salary starting at $18.00 per hour and is intended to support the department's operations during periods of high demand. The role is onsite based at the Ann Arbor Campus with working hours generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM, though schedules may vary depending on operational needs.

As a Parking Attendant, you will be responsible for collecting parking fees by operating fee computers and other electronic equipment, performing mathematical transactions manually, and processing various parking transactions in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high accuracy and minimal supervision. The role requires excellent customer service skills as you will assist customers with inquiries, respond discreetly to their needs, and help in emergency situations if necessary. You will also perform cash balancing activities, prepare reconciliation reports, and ensure money and documentation are sorted and prepared correctly for deposit. Keeping your work area clean and well-maintained is part of your daily duties to provide a safe and organized environment.

In addition to routine tasks, the Parking Attendant will play a role in coordinating parking operations to maximize the utilization of the parking facilities. This may include issuing tickets, directing traffic, and collecting fees during special events, which involves working in a dynamic and sometimes high-pressure environment. You will patrol the parking facilities to inspect for vandalism, loitering, or equipment malfunctions, helping to maintain security and operational integrity. Assisting parkers by answering inquiries and managing traffic control during special events or emergencies further emphasizes the importance of strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other team members.

The role also demands physical stamina as some work is performed outside in inclement weather and requires the ability to walk to and from the site while carrying departmental supplies and materials. Successful candidates will have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and must pass a departmental skills test before employment. Experience with electronic cash registers or systems and customer service is desirable, along with a minimum of two years of related work experience.

As an equal opportunity employer, the University of Michigan is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all employment decisions and conducts background checks on all job candidates following the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This temporary role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a respected institution's operational backbone while gaining valuable experience in facility and customer service management within a university medical campus setting.
