Job Description

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a well-established nonprofit organization and ministry of service with a rich history dating back to 1911. With nearly 500 paid professional employees, VOA-NCNN is one of the largest providers of social services in the region. The organization is committed to helping vulnerable populations such as homeless individuals, families, veterans, seniors, and youth by offering critical services including housing, employment support, substance abuse programs, and recovery services. Operating more than 40 programs, VOA-NCNN serves over 4,000 men, women, and children every night by providing shelter or housing, making a profound impact on the community it serves.

VOA-NCNN’s mission focuses on changing individual lives by instilling hope, increasing self-worth, and facilitating independence through quality housing, employment, and supportive services. The organization aims to inspire self-sufficiency, dignity, and hope among its clients across Northern California and Northern Nevada through compassionate and effective human and health services.

VOA-NCNN is currently recruiting a full-time Line Cook for the Family Shelter at the Parker House program, an 85-bed facility dedicated to providing short-term emergency housing (up to 30 days) and intensive supportive services to homeless families with dependent children. This role plays a key part in supporting the shelter's daily operations by preparing and serving nutritious meals to program participants in a professional and compassionate manner. The Line Cook helps ensure that clients feel welcomed and supported in a safe environment while maintaining the facility's high standards for food quality and safety.

The Line Cook will be responsible for daily meal preparation, cooking, serving, and supporting the operation of the food program. This includes tasks such as food prep, following recipes, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and adhering to safety protocols. Additionally, the role involves assisting with kitchen organization, labeling and stocking ingredients, preparing special dietary meals when required, and helping train new kitchen staff. The position requires flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, and demands adherence to health, safety, and sanitation standards.

Employees in this position are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including paid holidays, vacation, sick pay, and health, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance coverage. The position’s pay rate is competitive at USD $23.20 per hour. This role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a nonprofit dedicated to making a difference for vulnerable families in need, while developing culinary skills in a supportive and mission-driven environment.
