Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Indiana Paramedic License
  • Valid driver’s license compliant with IEMS driver eligibility policy
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification
  • American Heart Association CPR certification
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator certification
  • Continuing education to maintain required certifications

  • Knowledge of practical skills, theory and medical terminology in basic and advanced emergency medical care
  • Understanding of principles of human growth and age-appropriate care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
  • Skills in advanced respiratory techniques including endotracheal intubations and pleural decompression
  • Cardiac monitoring and interpretation, defibrillation, and cardioversion
  • Intravenous therapy including use of various injection methods and medications
  • Understanding medication indications, contraindications, side effects, and dosages
  • Ability to work effectively under emergency conditions and manage stress
  • Proficiency in operating emergency vehicles in all weather conditions
  • Strong decision-making ability for independent patient care
  • Effective communication skills in English
  • Ability to comprehend spoken and written information under stress
  • Physical capability including use of limbs, eyes, ears and voice
  • High medical psychomotor skills and cognitive knowledge
  • High accuracy in performing duties
  • Strong ethical responsibility with patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance

Job Duties

  • Responds in an IEMS vehicle for coverage of a scheduled special event as directed by the Planning Section Chief
  • Provides specific medical care in conjunction with physician, nursing and allied health staff in hospital according to established practices and protocols
  • Calculates drip rates and drug concentrations, administers approved intravenous drugs or fluid replacements per medical direction or EMS Protocols
  • Documents all relevant patient information in prescribed formats such as Run Report and ESO Report
  • Maintains accountability for controlled medications including narcotics
  • Drives emergency vehicles under emergent and non-emergent conditions
  • Exercises independent judgment in critical emergency situations
  • Coordinates public safety personnel during emergencies
  • Attends continuing education, refresher courses, medical audit, and training programs
  • Participates actively in continuing education and medical audit programs
  • May function alone or as a member of the Special Events Team
  • Supervises and directs activities and clinical education of assigned observers and students
  • Operates safely around emergency equipment
  • Protects patients, self, and other providers from contamination
  • Takes safety precautions for injured and assisting personnel
  • Complies with regulations for crime scenes and prehospital deaths including notification and protection of evidence
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
