Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current valid Illinois driver's license of proper classification
  • Successful completion of a paramedic program and maintenance of Illinois Department of Public Health License
  • Ability to complete required continuing education and testing
  • State of Illinois Firefighter certifications for firefighter applicants
  • Successful professional and criminal background check
  • Passing pre-employment testing including physical, drug screening, agility, and lifting evaluation

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a paramedic program
  • Current valid Illinois Department of Public Health License
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to operate firefighting and emergency medical equipment
  • Knowledge of city layout, response routes, and hydrant systems preferred
  • Training in emergency medical techniques and fire suppression preferred

Job Duties

  • Responding promptly to emergency calls and assessing medical needs
  • Administering appropriate medical treatment and interventions according to established protocols
  • Safely lifting, transferring, and maneuvering patients in various settings
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, healthcare professionals, and emergency responders
  • Completing and maintaining accurate records and documentation
  • Ensuring compliance with continuing education and licensure requirements
  • Maintaining professional appearance and demeanor
  • Inspecting and reporting issues with ambulances, vehicles, equipment, and supplies
  • Participating in public education, training, firefighting, and rescue activities
  • Operating firefighting and rescue equipment
  • Preserving evidence at fire scenes
  • Performing search and rescue operations in hazardous environments
  • Attending specialized instruction and drills
  • Assisting in training fire department personnel
  • Maintaining inventory of medications and controlled substances
