Job Description
The University of Alabama is a renowned public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Established in 1831, it has grown to become a leader in higher education, offering a broad spectrum of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The institution prides itself on academic excellence, innovative research, and a commitment to community engagement. It serves thousands of students annually, providing them with resources, support, and opportunities to succeed both academically and personally. The university also prioritizes equity and equal employment opportunity, ensuring a welcoming environment for faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds.
The Orientation and Special Events Coordinator position at The University of Alabama is a vital role based within the Orientation Department. This full-time, salaried role offers a competitive salary range with a minimum of $44,200 and a midpoint of $55,300, providing a stable and rewarding career opportunity. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., aligning with standard business hours.
This coordinator will plan, implement, manage, and administer comprehensive high school on-campus recruitment events, including the Sibling Orientation Program and University Days, among other special high school group-related events. The role supports the coordination of Bama Bound, UA's new student orientation program, which is a crucial event welcoming all new freshmen and transfer students to campus. The special events and orientation activities require meticulous planning, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The coordinator is expected to work collaboratively with university staff, students, and external partners to ensure successful event execution and participant satisfaction.
Additionally, the Orientation and Special Events Coordinator assists with supervising undergraduate and graduate students involved in the events, including overseeing a sizable student support team called Avanti, which consists of 50-60 members. The role includes direct supervision of 2-3 graduate student interns during the summer months and involves budget management responsibilities. Effective leadership, customer service orientation, and organizational expertise are essential qualities for this position. The coordinator must be able to build strong partnerships both on and off campus, demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and exhibit a passion for engaging with incoming students and their families.
The University of Alabama values innovation and anticipates that the coordinator will contribute to enhancing the orientation experience using modern tools and approaches. Familiarity with social media and communication coordination is a preferred qualification, reflecting the university's emphasis on digital engagement and contemporary outreach methods. This position demands a candidate who is both proactive and detail-oriented, capable of thriving in a dynamic higher education environment.
Before hiring, candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive pre-employment background investigation, including checks of social media and internet sources. While a prior conviction does not automatically disqualify applicants, an individualized review process ensures adherence to fairness and institutional policies.
The University of Alabama is steadfast in its commitment to equal employment and educational opportunities, legally protecting applicants and employees regardless of their protected status. This position offers a unique chance to be part of a leading university dedicated to academic freedom, institutional neutrality, and a culture of inclusivity and respect.
