Job Description

SEIU Local 2015 is the largest union of long-term care workers in California. Representing over half a million home care providers, skilled nursing facility staff, and assisted living center workers across the state, the union is deeply committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of its members. The union’s mission centers on unleashing the collective power of long-term care workers, their families, and communities to achieve lasting economic and social justice. SEIU Local 2015 is dedicated to building an anti-racist organization rooted in equity, justice, and solidarity across differences. This dedication extends into every aspect of the union’s work, from grassroots organizing to high-level advocacy and community engagement. More details about the union and its initiatives can be found at seiu2015.org.

The role of Organizing Coordinator (also called External Organizing Manager) at SEIU Local 2015 is a pivotal leadership position within the External Organizing / Growth Department, reporting directly to the Growth Director (Deputy Organizing Director). This exempt, full-time leadership role is based in Northern California and involves frequent travel, including evenings, weekends, and overnight stays, reflecting the demanding pace and high stakes of labor organizing work.

As Organizing Coordinator, the successful candidate will take charge of frontline organizing operations across several assigned campaigns and geographic regions. They will have direct supervision over Lead Organizers and organizing staff, transforming campaign strategy developed at the director level into effective day-to-day organizing activities. This involves setting clear performance expectations, coaching and supporting staff, managing logistics and field deployment, and ensuring campaigns meet their milestones and growth objectives. The coordinator acts as the vital operational connection between strategic campaign planning and field execution, requiring a strong capacity for leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability under pressure.

The role’s responsibilities are diverse and impact-driven, ranging from managing multiple private sector organizing campaigns through all phases—from initial assessment to recognition or elections—to maintaining real-time tactical adjustments based on campaign data and benchmarks. The Organizing Coordinator also plays a key role in leadership development, building systems to identify and cultivate worker leaders, supporting sustainable leadership structures, and ensuring accountability on leadership development goals. Proficiency in using data management tools such as VAN and Salesforce is essential for tracking organizing activity, monitoring performance metrics, and maintaining disciplined reporting.

This position demands a leader with demonstrated organizing experience (3-5+ years), high-level staff supervisory skills, an understanding of campaign pacing and escalation strategy, and a strong commitment to racial, economic, and social justice. Experience in private sector campaigns, knowledge of NLRB elections, and familiarity with union labor environments enhance a candidate's qualifications. Core competencies include an accountability-driven leadership style, effective communication and conflict management abilities, and alignment with the union’s core values of leadership, compassion, accountability, transparency, empowerment, and excellence.

The working environment is challenging and fast-paced, requiring flexibility to work irregular hours and travel extensively. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable access to a vehicle. SEIU Local 2015 is an equal opportunity employer endorsing diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and employment decisions are made free of discrimination based on any protected characteristic. This role offers an opportunity for a seasoned organizer to contribute to meaningful labor advocacy and build the power of California’s long-term care workforce.
