The Scheuer Coney Island Older Adult Center is currently seeking dedicated candidates for the position of Porter. This role is essential in maintaining the center's high standards of cleanliness, safety, and functionality. The Porter will perform a variety of custodial duties, minor repairs, and operational support tasks that contribute directly to creating a hospitable environment for both staff and center members. As a Porter at this center, you will help ensure that spaces remain pristine, orderly, and well-equipped for daily activities and special events.

This position is full-time, with a schedule from Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, totaling 35 hours per week. The work environment is dynamic, and the role requires physical stamina as well as attention to detail. In this role, your day-to-day responsibilities will include general cleaning tasks such as dusting, mopping, waxing, and washing floors, as well as cleaning windows, furniture, and fixtures. You'll be responsible for maintaining hygienic conditions in kitchen and restroom areas, restocking sanitation supplies, and managing waste disposal. Additionally, you will perform minor repairs including painting, plumbing, electrical fixes, and furniture upkeep, ensuring the facility remains in excellent condition.

This role also involves setting up rooms for programs, classes, and meetings, and assisting with emergency preparedness efforts, such as preparations for Cooling Centers in extreme weather. You will be entrusted with opening and closing the building, securing offices, and ensuring all lights and equipment are properly managed at the end of the day. Your contributions will support a safe, orderly, and welcoming atmosphere that empowers older adults and staff alike.

JASA encourages individuals who are physically capable of performing tasks that include heavy lifting, moving furniture, climbing stairs and ladders, and frequent bending to apply. A high school diploma is preferred, as is flexibility to accommodate special assignments or extended hours as needed. The ability to read, speak, and follow directions in English is essential, and possessing a valid driver’s license is a plus. Reliability, strong attention to detail, and a proactive approach are qualities that will support your success in this role.
