Job Description
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Established over a century ago, the Society has grown into one of the largest and most comprehensive cancer organizations in the world. With a robust network of employees and 1.3 million volunteers, the organization is steadfast in its life-saving mission to end cancer as we know it for everyone. Their work spans research, education, advocacy, and patient services, striving to ensure access to care for all affected by cancer. Diversity and inclusivity are central to the American Cancer Society’s culture, enabling them to better serve varied communities across the United States.
This specific role is for a part-time Concierge at the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge facility located in Iowa City. The Concierge serves as the first point of contact for guests, managing front desk operations and ensuring a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment for all visitors and residents. This position typically offers less than 20 hours per week based on business needs and is not benefits eligible. The hourly pay rate offered for this role is $18.59.
Working as a Concierge at Hope Lodge involves greeting guests and managing check-in and check-out processes, providing important information about the lodge amenities and resources available within the community. This role also coordinates transportation services and the EMPOWER Program schedules to meet guest needs. Additionally, the Concierge responds promptly to guest inquiries, requests, and any emergency situations that arise, ensuring a high standard of customer service and safety. Monitoring lobby security and implementing the necessary safety protocols form an integral part of the responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional education or training in hospitality or customer service considered a plus. Previous experience in hospitality, guest services, or related fields is preferred. Candidates should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be adept at multitasking, and have proficiency with Microsoft Office and multi-line phone systems. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required due to the nature of the position.
From a physical standpoint, the role demands endurance to stand and walk for extended periods, the ability to handle manual tasks such as lifting and moving luggage or packages as guests arrive and depart, and the stamina to remain efficient in a fast-paced environment. While minimal travel is necessary, the Concierge's focus remains on the onsite guest experience.
The American Cancer Society values its employees and provides a range of benefits including generous paid time off, medical and dental insurance, retirement plans, wellness initiatives, and ample opportunities for professional growth and training. Working at the Society offers not only a chance to build a career in a meaningful, mission-driven organization but also to be part of a supportive and diverse workplace that makes a real difference in people’s lives.
