Oakville Grocery, founded in 1881, is the oldest continually operating grocery store in California and a well-loved landmark in Napa Valley. We are currently seeking a passionate and dedicated Cheese Monger to join our team and support the Cheese and Charcuterie program. This role is integral to Oakville Grocery’s mission to offer artisanal cheeses and charcuterie of the highest quality, enhancing our customers’ experience through knowledgeable service and professional cheese presentation. The position offers both part-time and full-time opportunities, making it flexible for candidates interested in various schedules.

As a Cheese Monger, you will work closely with store leadership to manage all aspects of cheese operations - including sourcing, inventory management, merchandising, education, and customer engagement. You will play a crucial role in maintaining product quality and creating visually appealing and creative cheese and charcuterie boards that meet Oakville Grocery’s exceptionally high standards. Responsibilities also include managing margins and waste to ensure financial efficiency and supporting catering production to create timely and outstanding order fulfillment.

Candidates for this position should have a deep passion for cheese and food in general, with a creative culinary perspective that supports innovation in merchandising and menu development. Strong organizational and multitasking skills are essential, as is the ability to thrive in a fast-paced retail environment. The Cheese Monger should also possess excellent communication skills to educate both customers and team members about product offerings, enhancing the customer experience and fostering an informed and enthusiastic community around specialty foods.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks throughout the shift
  • lift and carry up to 40 lbs
  • manual dexterity for food preparation and handling
  • retail environment experience with moderate noise levels
  • ability to work flexible schedules including weekends, evenings, and seasonal overtime
  • commitment to food safety and cleaning standards

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience
  • 1-3 months of related experience preferred
  • food handler certification or ability to obtain
  • valid driver’s license with insurable record
  • basic math and computer skills

Job Duties

  • Source, order, and manage inventory for cheese and charcuterie products
  • receive and maintain product quality standards
  • merchandise displays including wrapping, presentation, and cross-merchandising
  • prepare cheese and charcuterie boards
  • manage margins and minimize waste
  • educate team members and customers on products
  • support catering production and ensure timely, high-quality order fulfillment
  • maintain efficient systems and processes for opening, closing, mid-shift, and cleanliness
  • collaborate with store leadership on new products, menu items, and improvements
