The Nutrition Services Executive Chef role within Adams 12 Five Star Schools is a full-time, 12-month position based at the Educational Support Center in Thornton, CO. This role carries a salary range at Level 9, starting at $67,020, with a midpoint of $82,740, and a maximum of $98,461, reflecting the candidate's experience and qualifications. As the Nutrition Services Executive Chef, you will be responsible for the development of new menus and recipes that are served across all school kitchens in the district. A key focus is on creating nutritious meals that comply with USDA guidelines for Child Nutrition Programs while emphasizing the use of fresh, local ingredients to maintain high-quality standards and fiscal responsibility. The position requires culinary creativity and leadership in collaborating with the Menu Coordinator to plan cycle menus that meet nutritional standards and budgetary constraints.
The Executive Chef oversees the daily operations of the central kitchen, including staff training, mentorship, supervision, and performance evaluation. You will play a critical role in maintaining food quality, safety, and compliance with local health department standards and federal and state regulations. The role demands active engagement with kitchen staff and school sites to ensure meals are prepared safely, meet quality expectations, and are well received by students. Additionally, you will monitor inventory, ensure proper food storage and rotation, and maintain accurate health logs. The Executive Chef will provide culinary training, demonstrations, and leadership to kitchen staff, managers, substitutes, and visitors to uphold the nutrition services department’s standards. The ability to respond promptly to operational issues and participate in daily production in the central kitchen as needed is essential. Serving as a liaison with distribution representatives, district stakeholders, and local food suppliers, you will help align nutrition services with organizational goals. Job Requirements
- Criminal background check required for hire
- Successful completion of post-offer physical examination prior to commencement of job duties
- Must obtain and maintain Serve Safe Certification within one year of entering position
- Must meet national professional standards and training requirements for school nutrition professionals managing National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs
- Recommend membership with School Nutrition Association and Colorado School Nutrition Association
- Recommend attending Colorado School Nutrition Association annual conference every two years
- Must complete district courses Progressive Discipline and Classified Evaluation System within one year of entering position
Job Qualifications
- Certified Executive Chef (CEC) degree or certification preferred
- Experience serving in a K-12 environment preferred
- Minimum three years experience as an Executive Chef in a large volume food service operation
- Experience in from scratch recipe and food development
- Experience in large batch cooking and equipment
- Strong leadership and mentorship skills
- Knowledge of federal and state nutrition regulations
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Job Duties
- Develop recipes and standards for food preparation from scratch that adhere to USDA nutritional requirements for Child Nutrition Programs
- Maximize use of fresh, local ingredients in recipe development and menu planning while maintaining fiscal responsibility
- Uphold operating standards for the department and assist in development of Nutrition Services-specific standards
- Provide culinary vision and collaborative creation in cycle menu process with Menu Coordinator
- Oversee daily kitchen operations and staff including training, mentoring, evaluation, hiring, and discipline
- Assist with daily production in central kitchen as needed
- Review, approve, and verify reported time using district time and labor system
- Support operations ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in food preparation, delivery, and service
- Train employees and substitutes on food preparation, quality, safety, sanitation, and equipment use
- Support proper inventory controls of central kitchen-produced items
- Visit school sites regularly to provide support and engage with students during mealtimes
- Oversee proper storage and rotation of food, ingredients, and supplies to ensure freshness and minimize waste
- Monitor and ensure all food-related items from delivery meet quality standards
- Maintain accurate health department logs on products and equipment
- Monitor and ensure compliance with Health Department standards, HACCP, employee expectations, and all applicable regulations
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
