Job Requirements

  • Attend and complete aircraft manufacturer annual refresher course
  • Maintain commercial rotorcraft pilot certification and current Class II Medical Certificate
  • Meet FAA physical, mental, and emotional standards
  • Maintain FAA commercial pilot currency
  • Complete cockpit dunker and water survival training
  • Pass drug screening and background investigation
  • Possess and maintain a valid state driver's license
  • Be willing to work shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Meet training and performance standards
  • Wear agency protective apparel and equipment
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee during emergencies

Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Rotorcraft-Helicopter rating and no violations
  • Current FAA Medical Certificate-Second Class
  • At least 2000 flight hours as pilot-in-command rotorcraft-helicopter
  • At least 1500 flight hours as pilot-in-command turbine rotorcraft-helicopter
  • At least 500 flight hours as pilot-in-command night unaided or aided flights
  • Preferred associate's or bachelor's degree
  • Preferred 500 flight hours in MD520N and/or 1000 hours in MD500 series aircraft
  • All required certifications attached with application

Job Duties

  • Conduct all FAA activities for a commercial rating as pilot-in-command of rotorcraft-helicopter
  • Comply with all SOPs of the Prince George's County Police Aviation Section
  • Perform pre-flight, flight, and post-flight operations including go/no-go launch decisions
  • Cancel or terminate flights if aircraft airworthiness is in question
  • Pilot or co-pilot helicopters in all weather and lighting conditions
  • Evaluate weather conditions before and during flights to ensure safety
  • Perform preflight planning and briefings for passengers and crewmembers
  • Communicate with air traffic controllers and airport control towers per FAA regulations
  • Maintain flight logs, records, and report maintenance issues
  • Perform routine aircraft maintenance as allowed
  • Attend seminars and training to improve airborne law enforcement skills
  • Perform public relations duties speaking to schools and community groups
  • Adhere to agency protective apparel and equipment requirements
