The Sous Chef role at ShopRite is an integral part of the Food Service Department, designed to support the Food Service Manager and Head Chef in delivering outstanding culinary services with a focus on seafood and meat preparation. This full-time position involves active participation in daily food preparation activities that contribute to a superior customer experience. The Sous Chef is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and safety in the work environment while ensuring that food products are handled and prepared in accordance with the company’s policies and health regulations.

This position requires a professional who can provide attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly service to customers. The Sous Chef must be capable of performing multiple kitchen duties ranging from preparing salads, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, and entrees to handling catering orders. Working closely with the team, the Sous Chef helps maintain an organized and efficient operation, ensuring that all food items meet ShopRite's quality standards. Additionally, this role involves inventory management tasks such as receiving, storing, labeling, and rotating products to preserve freshness and prevent waste.

Physical ability is crucial for the role since it demands standing for extended periods, lifting heavy items, and working in environments with varying temperatures. The Sous Chef must also be adept at using a variety of kitchen equipment, including slicers, rotisseries, fryolators, and ovens, while following all safety protocols. Adherence to hygiene standards, such as proper handwashing and the use of disposable gloves, is mandatory to maintain food safety standards.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to proficiently read, write, speak, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language
  • Ability to perform basic math
  • Ability to stand/walk for the duration of a scheduled shift
  • Ability to stand, bend, twist, reach, push, pull and regularly lift 25 lbs, and occasionally lift up to 60 lbs
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures
  • Ability to work with fresh, dried and/or processed products, spices and powdered substances without negative allergic consequences
  • Ability to tolerate dust and chemical agents during routine housekeeping duties
  • Ability to interact with Customers in a friendly and helpful way
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to operate all equipment customarily used by the Food Service Department and other equipment as may be required
  • Ability to work all assigned work schedules and comply with all time and attendance policies

Job Duties

  • Maintain a clean, neat, organized, and safe work environment
  • Clean and sanitize all work surfaces, utensils and equipment in accordance with Department of Sanitation and QA standards
  • Keep floor clear of debris and spills
  • Greet all Customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service
  • Promote for sale any current charitable promotions to Customers
  • Maintain acceptable shelf, case and display conditions by stocking, cleaning, straightening and rotating product
  • Prepare product, including salads, sandwiches, chicken, pizza, and pasta, entrees, catering orders, according to recipe and established Company standards
