Job Description

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department at NCBC Gulfport is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for service members and their families by providing a variety of recreational and fitness services. Within the MWR Department, the Fitness Division’s Aquatics Branch operates and maintains indoor and outdoor swimming pools, ensuring safe and enjoyable aquatic experiences for all patrons. This branch plays a vital role in promoting health, wellness, and recreational activities among military personnel and their communities at the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Job Requirements

  • Must have Lifeguard with CPR/AED for professional Rescuers and First Aid Certification
  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation
  • Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms
  • Must successfully pass the E-verify employment verification check
  • Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment
  • A valid State driver’s license is required to operate motor vehicles
  • Must have current Lifeguard with CPR/First Aid certification and upload proof
  • Must have salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer
  • You must go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9
  • Must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National
  • You must be a US Citizen
  • Males must be registered or exempt from Selective Service
  • Social Security Card is required
  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-VERIFY) check
  • A favorable background is a requirement of this position
  • Failure to obtain and maintain a favorable background may result in the withdrawal of the position offer or removal

Job Qualifications

  • One year of specialized experience directly related to the duties described above
  • Sufficient maturity to focus on the importance of due diligence of patrons at all times
  • Ability to exercise control over a large group of people
  • Ability to appropriately identify hazards or hazard situations
  • Act decisively and immediately in any situation which could result in harm to a patron - either by identifying a patron in distress, or by the ability to tactful but forcefully provide instruction on water safety and facility rules and regulations and enforce them
  • Experience must include paid and unpaid positions, including volunteer work
  • Resume must clearly identify duties and responsibilities and total hours worked per week
  • Completion of occupational questionnaire and resume must support and validate answers to be considered
  • Only the most highly qualified candidates will be referred

Job Duties

  • Responsible for the safety of swimmers in the pool
  • Remain alert and continuously observe swimming area to ensure safety of patrons
  • Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, assist swimmers having difficulty and rescue those in trouble
  • Perform rescue work and when necessary, render first aid until such time as qualified doctor or other emergency personnel are present
  • In case of a serious accident will call for an ambulance
  • Prepare complete accident report
  • Alert supervisor of unusual circumstances
  • Perform any necessary housekeeping tasks to ensure proper standards of cleanliness, sanitation and appearance of pool and related facilities (vacuuming pool, cleaning deck, etc.)
  • Inspect pool and surrounding area ensuring cleanliness and safety at all times
  • Check chlorine and PH levels on a scheduled basis
  • Immediately communicate problems or concerns of the aquatic environment to the aquatics manager
  • Determine patron eligibility and provides quality customer service to patrons
  • Answer questions and provides program information to patrons
  • May assist with scheduled pool parties after hours of operation or with a base wide special event
  • Maintain daily logs and records
  • Perform other duties as assigned
